Also, a bank can't just decide to put you in debt, lol. Nor can it keep you in debt if you pay it off.

True but they can use predatory tactics to get people roped in. They can tack on rediculous interest rates and fees..

I have several credit cards I use regularly, and literally don't know or care what the interest rates are because I pay my statement balance every month, which I can do because I don't buy more than I can afford.

Also every bank has a fee schedule they are required to make public (so you can see it before you even do any business with it, so you can very easily shop around for those with lower/fewer fees) and directly provide to everyone upon account opening. If you are ever surprised by a fee a bank charged you, that's on you, period.

That was me too, for many years. Credit score well into the eight hundreds. But life isn't always fair. You've been fortunate not to have the rug swept out from under you so far. Don't get too comfortable. Shit happens.
