Nor did the successful attacks against Israel. It has been in a precarious situation since its inception.
And yeah, the current reason to support Israel is to oppose Iran, that's pretty clear. But the US also doesn't want open war with Iran either. But the conflict with Iran is pretty recent, starting with the Iranian Revolution, before that, relations were pretty good. To be fair, the revolution was largely a reaction to the CIA regime change, but my point is that's not the reason the US supported Israel, it has always been about helping Israel defend itself from its hostile neighbors. Whether Israel is worth supporting is another issue entirely (I think it was a mistake).
If you're expecting a change in action from the US, you'll be sorely disappointed. At a certain point, it's more habit than anything.
