Hello everyone,

Thinking about this as the on-boarding experience on Lemmy can be subpar, especially because new joiners have to

In order to avoid this, what would you think of having a "new joiners" instance, where

  • hexbear, lemmygrad and ml would be defederated
  • politics and news communities would be blocked at the instance level

That could help to onboard people, so that the first time they look around, they see more gardening, cute comics and casual conversation rather than another set of depressing memes.

Disclaimer: politics and societal issues are important and should be discussed extensively (they are quite popular on Lemmy, let's be honest). I'm not advocating to hide them all, just to not show them as the first content people potentially interested in Lemmy would see.

ani.social user, hi!

I'm honestly not sure where people get these images from. Yes, they do often post the source, but I wonder. Is someone specifically searching for art to post on all those communities? Does the art just turn up in their usual browsing and they pass it onto us here?

Something something people visual content engagement blah blah idk?

If you're seriously looking for sources, you can find tons on danbooru.donmai.us however i'm not sure why people post it here. I think defederating (blocking) stuff on the instance level (not just the community level) would make sense for this.

Ah, I should have made it clearer: I was more interested in the processes of the people posting out of curiosity, not to post pictures myself. I am here because I like anime and manga, yes, but I want to discuss them and get new recommendations here on Lemmy. I have no interest in using Lemmy as an image aggregator for anime and manga fandoms, especially because Danbooru and Pixiv have tagging systems I can filter by and Lemmy does not; and they are bigger and more established and can take the image load. Thanks for trying to help though!

I think people post the pictures as a combination of it being something they like, trying to keep a small Fediverse community active in the name of growing it, and… frankly, it is what they are probably used to. Back on Reddit, I'd seek out a sub for an anime I watched that I liked, only to find there is no discussion, no cool fan theories, just a bunch of fanart that someone besides the poster created, and to be honest that really wasn't what I was looking for. I also don't want to have to tell a bunch of people doing something they like to change to suit my tastes, so I just left. Here on the Fediverse, there are a few discussion communities that suit me :)
