Know thyself and set a timer. I don't allow myself to do stuff like that without setting an alarm.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Beep, beep, beep,

Beep, beep, beep,

What's that for, again?

Better turn it off

I’m gonna turn it off now, and get to it right away. Where does the burn smell come from?

MultiTimer for Android and iOS: Set as many labelled timers as you like.

Android (not sure about iOS) you can also label your native alarm app alarms.

Can recommend 👍👍

"Why does it smell burnt? I am sure I set a timer!"

[–] d00ery@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

"Hey Google, set a 20 min reminder*, 'drinks in the freezer'"

20 mins later Google will notify "Brinks the breezer" but hopefully that's enough to remind me.

Yeah I get real snotty with the assistant too, cussing it out and talking mad shit. I don't care if a future AI catches me out. Fuck Roku's Basilisk, either a superhuman AI respects lesser beings or it's no better than a flawed hypocrite like me.

Give it the British lady voice and it will soothe your rage when it fucks up.

20 minutes later: silences timer because I’m too focused on something else.

2 days later: … crap.

"Guess I'm re-washing that load of laundry."

[–] luciferofastora@lemmy.zip 2 points 21 hours ago

Don't you fucking call me out like that, dammit

I have graduated to even screwing up my timers. Now the timer doesn't get silenced until the thing it is timing gets accomplished. Unless I'm distracted and fail to use that rule, then it's back to square one of course.

Edit: whoops, two people already said basically this. Guess I'll leave it

I usually press the "+1 minute" button and then the "pause" button. That way it stays in the tray of my phone and I'm too OCD to not get rid of it as soon as possible. Then of course you have to adhere to the rule of only removing the timer once you did what you set the timer for...

[–] TDCN@feddit.dk 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Use alarms and snooze them instead giving you 10 min until it rimgs again. Repeat until task is done

[–] Benjaben@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

But then don't you have to set it to a precise time on the clock each time you use it, rather than "30 min in the future", for example? The issue for me is timers that I set often, like while cooking. Seems like a minor annoyance maybe but I use them while cooking and entertaining especially, AKA having my attention severely split already lol, additional complexity is to be avoided

[–] TDCN@feddit.dk 2 points 11 hours ago

Yes it doesn't really work for cooking or tasks where you need to be precise, but then snoozing wouldn't work anyway since 10 min would be too long for most occasions. However you can use your assistant on your phone to set precise alarms. Just say "Hey Google/Siri set an alarm for 12 minuts for the pizza" and it should set an alarm instead of a timer.

I just have a few generic alarms on my phone i keep changing for whenever i need them. They dont repeat weekly on Android automatically so they are like single use. I also do also have weekly repeating timers for remembering stuff like trash bins or groceries delivery.

I love when my timer goes off and I have no memory of setting it. Which critically important thing am I forgetting now?

[–] stetech@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

Rule 1: set timers Rule 2: name ‘em

[–] slampisko@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Yep! My fridge has a one-tap 30-min timer specifically for drinks in the freezer (you can also then adjust the time with more taps). Needless to say, it is one of the most used functions of my fridge (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

[–] arandomthought@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago

Don't know wheter it is a "smart fridge" but that's one smart fridge!

[–] astrsk@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Everyone’s gotta learn the hard way.

[–] arandomthought@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago

Oh yes, that rule I set for my self is written in ~~blood~~ moldy laundry.
