I'll admit i don't really know what libertarians claim to want or belive in. Like aren't they just unpopular republicans?

They used to be weirdo republicans but than the republican party became universally more weird than them.

They were never Republicans. The Republican Party split post-Trump loss and a bunch of them infested the Libertarian party.
