The vegan place to discuss things.

Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

Welcome to the Vegan Theory Club Weekly Megathread!

Question of the week:

"Tell me about a discussion you've had with the intent of guiding someone towards veganism? How did it go? What could you have done differently?

Feel free to talk about anything, whether it’s vegan-related or not. This is a chill space for connecting, sharing ideas, and supporting each other.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone’s up to!

Hi!

I'm not speaking on behalf of this instance or anyone else on here.

I'm not sure you had the opportunity to see the content of the thread where defederating was discussed? I don't really browse all and only subscribe to a few communities outside of this instance so I am not super well versed, but when I read that thread, I learned that there are a few communities on your instance that seem to be designed to stir up drama with other communities for whatever reason. I think that is one of the reasons it was being floated. In the end, it didn't seem to be the right choice for the community.

I'm not sure that it's easy to pin down harassment to particular users, as people can have multiple accounts across multiple instances. I think this is one of the reasons defederating wasn't necessarily the right choice for this instance.

I can certainly understand why it would be hurtful to come across people wanting to defederate. I believe with this instance the hope is for things to be discussed publicly as much as possible and for decisions to be made with the community. That can mean having tough discussions about how things impact us and it can get messy. I am very confused about how this earns us the label of tankie, but I will never understand everything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, I did see the thread. The main communities mentioned seemed to be NonCredibleDefense and MeanwhileOnGrad.

NCD is a meme community focusing around topics such as military equipment, wars, and geopolitics. They seem to have a generally pro-Western/NATO slant, which sometimes conflicts with the anti-western viewpoints held on some Lemmy servers. Left alone, they would just be posting memes about being sexually attracted to fighter jets. But because a bunch of others on Lemmy believe that such memes indicate that they are fascists and/or sociopaths, occasional drama does arise.

MeanwhileOnGrad is definitely a community that stirs some drama, I can't deny that. They post screenshots of content from lemmygrad and hexbear in order to publicize some of the extreme views that are commonly expressed within those communities. If the target were anyone other than tankies, I would probably have less tolerance for that community. However, in the context of Lemmy, where the devs and most of the original servers are extreme leftists, I am not so sympathetic to accusations of bullying. In my view, the tankie perspective is more than fairly represented already, and MeanwhileOnGrad is simply a healthy counterpoint to the pervasive bullying that is done by tankies to every other Lemmy server.

I believe with this instance the hope is for things to be discussed publicly as much as possible and for decisions to be made with the community. That can mean having tough discussions about how things impact us and it can get messy.

That's the same way we handle things on sh.itjust.works. Having a frank discussion with the community and coming to a consensus. Unfortunately on Lemmy, it seems that every server gets labeled as either tankie or fascist and frequently both, so you're in good company.
