Even once the process of transformation was completed, a lich had to continue to enact special conjurations and enchantments to sustain their undead form, such as by casting Nulathoe's Ninemen on their phylactery once every 777 days and by continuing to feed their phylactery with souls via the Imprisonment spell. Failure to do so would cause them to slowly fall apart.
