It always makes me think, like don’t they have to be smart in order to code, let alone work in tech?

Yeah, sort of. But to fit in and thrive in the tech industry, ideological obedience and having no distracting interests or values other than "make the rich richer" are even more important.

Absolutely not. You do have to be able to code and debug in order to code, and even then, some people...

Even PhDs can say stupid things outside their expertise.
