If being a weaboo wasn't embarrasing enough, I also went through the "hipster weaboo" phase. I rejected the likes of Naruto and Bleach and opting to watch the likes of Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain, and Paprika—the more ‘highbrow’ ones. Even the less artistic ones such as Welcome to the NHK, Aria (all three series), and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, I picked up less because of how I enjoy it, but more about how “difficult it is for the mainstream” to get into.
Now, I think things have gotten better: I no longer care about the trash I watch, but I still avoid mainstream titles for different reasons (too shonen-y, too much lewd fanservice, focus on fight scenes, etc).
I really wish I got the chance to watch Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain (ang cool pa naman nung keeb inspired by it), Ergo Proxy, and the likes when I was still into anime. Ngayon medyo mahirap na magsingit ng mga completed series sa schedule. I can only watch in a weekly episodic format.
It can be daunting as well, but participating in rewatch discussions has helped me delve into some of the older shows. I joined the Macross rewatch a few years back and it took us months to reach up until Delta. I saw most the shows in the list, but I might not have gone through Macross 7 just by myself. The only real problem though is the schedules for the post in order to properly participate in the discussions.
I kinda gave up on Evangelion because it's too much work. The rebuild is cool, but I think the original series (plus End of Evangelion) is a prerequisite to making sense of what the rebuild is offering to the viewer.
Serial Experiments Lain is just one season, but it requires you to pay attention (which is a common theme to these titles).
I didn't get to watch Ergo Proxy too, IDK why.
I think the fact that I wasn't really into the genre (and this happened during a time I was trying to explore what kinds of shows I'm into) made me burnt-out quickly.
Not only do those shows require close attention from the viewer, but I find that you can't watch a bunch of episodes in one sitting and “get it”. It has to percolate in your head for a time.
Napanood ko ergo proxy dahil nasa netflix hahaha same with eva. Both this year ko lang pinanood. Probably would not have watched if wala doon. Pero agree mejo wala rin ako na gets on both anime hahah
Minarathon mo sa Netflix? Not too sure if Ergo Proxy is the kind of anime that's best left percolating after each episode, and/or it takes more than one pass through to get it.
That reminds me of one of those anime, Texhnolyze. I watched it for the "Hipster cred" and I ended up with depression, and worse, I don't get it, HAHAHAHAHA!! Yung tumatak lang sa akin is the incredibly bleak ending (even more bleak than End of Evangelion's imo). Even worse, I don't think I can watch it again knowing the ending, it's just too depressing.
kekw napa wtf na nga ko sa eva may mas malala pa pala HAHAHAH. well mejo interested kasi ako sa overall plot ng ergo proxy I needed answers not sleep kaya na marathon ko
Texhnolyze has a different kind of wtf than Evangelion. I dare say it's more visceral in the sense that it doesn't slap you with it, but rather hit you in the gut, but it's also likely that it's just me. What I can say though that it's a brutal watch on multiple levels, and the reward you get from watching it is depression, unless you transcend and actually get it (or watch a video explainer like this, lol).
Now, I am interested in giving Ergo Proxy a try. Maybe I can intersperse it with something relaxing (Mushishi, perhaps?) so that it isn't so taxing.
