It's important to remember that the US filled the West German government with "former" Nazis after the war

Brandt was a former resistance member, fleeing (twice) from the Nazis. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willy_Brandt

Willy Brandt was not a Nazi. He was a social Democrat who took exile in Norway/Sweden during Hitler's reign. As chancellor of West Germany, he "made peace" with Poland and East Germany, and was a big inspiration for the Cold War Detente.
