If the store hires/schedules enough professional cashiers to cover all the registers (or enough per amount of customers at that hour) you'll get through a lot faster than waiting behind all the untrained customers trying to scan, code, and bag their own groceries. A good cashier can scan a cartful six times as fast as the average customer, especially if there's also a bagger, and you can be entering your credit card or other payment information at the same time. If you are waiting, it's because of corporate greed understaffing.
Any cashier can scan faster because they don't have unexpected items in the bagging area.
I know what you're getting at, but at least for me that's not the reality.
I'm aware of ALDI cashier that scan faster any normal human being can pack their bags. And I guess even if enough regular checkouts were open and they would all operate at ALDI level, that would be an option. Still, you have to talk to people, who wants that?
But for me it isn't the case. There is usually 8-12 self-checkouts availible, so there is never really a line. Also you can get a mobile scanner and scan everything as you are shopping, then you just have to scan the scanner on the checkout. If you do that, not even ALDI cashiers can match that speed.
Really the most time delay is caused by buying alcohol and having to wait for staff to confirm your age. Sometimes they do have remotes and just unlock it from a distance, but other times the self checkout are basically unsupervised and you have to go look for a person to unlock your register. But that's the exception.
They're not going to do that, instead it will be 3 slow ass cashiers at best and you'll be waiting to have to stand there awkwardly while some dude tries to act like he'd rather not be dead instead of doing what he's currently doing and you're trying your best not to seem like as ass because you've been waiting for 10 minutes just to get to that point.
You'll get the worst of both worlds.
(ps, just do curbside pickup. You don't get to pick your produce or meats but it's very easy and you spend so much less time grocery shopping)
yup, supermarkets are not hiring specialized professional cashiers, they are worked by employees that have to spin many plates, that's why it's extremely rare for all the lines to be open at the same time.
We started using yummy.com during lockdown and never really went back, although once in awhile I'll do a big shop in our best local independent grocery store, for the interesting specialty items they carry, and more variety of fresh fish, meat and veg. We like the convenience of all being able to add to the cart from our various devices, then I put in the latest coupon, add a tip, and in less than an hour it's at our apartment door.
