Picture this: You're at a busy bar when the whisper of a song comes trickling out of some busted speaker; you want to save it for future listening, but Shazam-ing it is pointless because it's just too darn loud.

Well, that's not a problem for the patrons of the Little Soul Cafe in Tokyo, because music is the focus here. As part of our Sense of Place: Japan series, we stepped inside this listening bar with an impeccable aura.

Just started getting into The Flaming Lips and saw this for not too bad of a price and couldn't help myself. I love the art for this album! Here's the back:

This flat square of plastic doesn't sound so bad!
It came in the Bloom County comic collection shown in the picture (Billy and the Boingers), and contains two tracks performed by a fictional in-universe band.
It's probably not technically vinyl.

Sorry for the crappy image. This is just to satisfy my own curiosity. I'm talking about the 'Stereo-mono' symbol. Does this mean it was recorded mono and converted to stereo? The album was released in 1974.

For my post today, I had a pretty good mail call today for records. I don't usually buy records online, as I like the hunt of trying to find the records physically, but when a deal calls, I'll take it. The deal for today came in the form of some UK 45s that I got for the equivalent of $3 each. I got 5 original UK press Beatles singles with the original Parlophone sleeve and a copy of the Beat's Tears of A Clown/Ranking Full Stop single in a 2-tone sleeve. All of the records are in VG+ condition.

I don't usually buy Beatles records, as they don't interest me too much in comparison to other bands of the period, but it's still cool to have the original documents of Beatlemania in their complete form. Overall, I'm happy to get these records and add them to the UK originals pile. Although, if I were able to get some 60s US Rolling Stones picture sleeves, I'd be a very happy camper.

For fans of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and Frankie & The Witch Fingers

This record is so good. Been after it for ages but thankfully it keeps getting reissues in lovely colours.

This one is described as "Kamikaze Kandy". It actually looks a lot paler than this but I've jacked up the contrast to counteract the camera flash.

Alt Text: LP on a shelf with the vinyl record half out of the sleeve. The record is blue and pink swirl / splatter effect. The sleeve contains assorted illustrations including a pair of hands stuck in a finger trap; a mouse-trap; a venus flytrap; and 5 women sitting atop hourglasses but they have voids instead of faces

To continue my finds from the flea market from this weekend, I was able to grab some more very good records from the same bin that I found the Captain Beefheart records from my post from yesterday. Again, this person had some eccentric taste, so I was able to pull out some real gems from the batch.

The craziest find from these other records has to be the Fripp and Eno No Pussyfooting record, as I've never see this record anywhere in my time collecting, and wouldn't expect to in the US. The other records that I got were good as well, as I got the first Roxy Music album and David Bowie's Scary Monsters. All and all, these records were also $5 apiece to get, which I was more than happy to get these records for.

Lovely colour combo on this one. Awesome release overall, the embossed outer sleeve is a nice touch and the mastering is superb, so heavy!

When the bonus track on side D started I thought it was going to be Murder of the Universe 2 but it was still a cool story

For my newest finds from the flea market this weekend, I've got some crazy finds to show you guys. the first and craziest finds that I had came from one seller, which is also where I found most of the other records I found. Whoever this guy or girl was had some very eccentric taste, as I was able to come across not one, not two, but three Captain Beefheart records in the same bin. It's insanely hard to find Beefheart records anywhere, let alone a flea market, and to find three of them in one place is bonkers.

It's weird too, as these records are from three different eras of Beefheart's career, so there wasn't consistency in the release date. However, I did not have these records to begin with, so I'm not complaining. I only had to pay $5 apiece, which would be higher price in flea market terms, but for these records, I won't haggle.

I got:

Dizzy Gillespie - Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac -wild, bigger band stuff from 1967

Jimmy Smith's - Greatest Hits comp - the great Hammond B3 organ master

Oscar Peterson - Night Train - piano, bass, drums. Mmm...

and my new favorite,

Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Sings Gershwin - 10" from 1951

The release on Discogs is here

To complete my flea market finds from the weekend, I was able to find an album I've been trying to find for a little bit of time. I like collecting Marvin Gaye records, especially singles, and I've been trying to get any albums that I don't have from him. I was happy to then find a copy of his classic album Here My Dear (AKA the TMI divorce album) for only $2. it's cool that i was able to come across this album, as I've found it hard to find some of Marvins records in the wild. Overall, I am quite happy to expand upon my Marvin Gaye albums.

Do you guys replace your cartridge based on the amount of time it's been used or when it's necessary to do so because of a noticeable decline in audio quality?

Also what are some telltale signs that a cartridge needs to go?

It's been a little while since I've posted some finds I've had, but I had a couple finds on my trip to the flea market yesterday. It was busy that day, but there weren't a lot of people selling records at the tables. However, the tables that I did find had some decent stuff to look through. I was able to grab all of these singles from one table for only $9, so less than $1 apiece for these.

I would say the best singles from this batch would be the copy of Dobie Gray's "The 'In' Crowd" and the Carl Perkins "Blue Suede Shoes" on Sun. when I saw the Dobie Gray, I was hoping it was going to be the single "Out On The Floor", but I'll take any that I can get. The Marvin Gaye singles were cool as well, as I have been trying to get all of the Marvin Gaye singles I can. Overall, I had some decent finds and I am happy to have these records in my collection.

For today, I will be showing something truly special. It's not only of musical value, or even monetary value, its of truly historically valuable on its impact on indie music. I am the very happy owner of an original 1980 copy of Orange Juice's Falling and Laughing. This is the record that truly kicked off the indie-pop sound that we've come to know from the mid to late 80s, to the 90s, and even the 2000s.

This record came in a run of only 934 copies, and went on to launch Postcard Records as a label to influence bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Wedding Present, Belle and Sebastian, King Krule, The Cribs, The Smiths (though only slightly), the C86 scene of the mid 80s, the twee pop of labels like Sarah (Field Mice, Another Sunny Day, The Orchids, Brighter, Heavenly, etc) and K (Beat Happening), and many more. It is a marvel to now be an owner of a copy of this record. Not only that, this is also one of only 200 copies out of the 934 copy run that has the extra postcard included with it (This one being a pair of pliers). This also includes the extra flexi disc that was sometimes included with this record.

This is a valuable piece of music history that ought to be preserved in archives and I feel Orange Juice deserves some mention in music history for the impact this record and the Postcard singles that followed had on modern music.

Another Smashing Pumpkins record reissue. This one has 5 LPs and costs a whopping $110... probably only for hardcore fans

I feel like this record sells out like hot cakes so thought I'd share it here. It's pretty pricey though

I used to have an AT LP60 turntable and at one point I realized it was too fast when set at 33 1/3 for most of my LPs.

Disclaimers:

I am not an expert and obviously not an audiophile.

I am OK with my LP60 and I suspect there are at least a few people here who feel the same way and may have this same problem (someday).

If you are an audiophile and hate this TT, please go read something else. This post is not for you.

OK, so, I realized some of my records sounded too fast recently and here's how I fixed that:

I downloaded an app to determine my TT's speeds.

I have an android phone, so I chose RPM Speed & Wow from the Google Play store.

There are iPhone apps out there too.

It's free and easy to use and very quickly shows you how fast your TT is roatating.

This is not perfect but again, close enough is close enough for me.

Mine showed 34.9 at first (when set on the 33 1/3 RPM setting).

Remove any record from the TT.

Carefully, look under the TT for the two holes marked "33" and "45".

Find a very small flat-head screwdriver.

Use that to gently poke through the fabric covering inside the 33 hole.

Very, very slowly and gently, seat the screwdriver into the screw inside that hole without turning it.

Turn the screw but only very, very slightly.

Seriously - a TINY turn is probably all you need. Less than a quarter turn for sure.

Turn it clockwise to make the table go faster.

Turn it counter-clockwise to make the table go slower.

Run the app on your phone again to test the new speed.

Repeat the adjustment until you get a result very close to 33.33.

Repeat this whole process for 45 RPM if you want to.

I had to repeat this adjustment about 5 times, making ever smaller changes to the screw's position before I got 33.34 from the app on my phone. Just make very small changes every time and you'll be OK.

The result is noticeable. I am very happy with this change and I hope this helps someone else.

TL;DR: AT LP60 turntables are good but not great turntables - and there's no fixing that, but you can adjust their speed. It's free & easy to do this. It's worth it too.

Hoping to snag a copy before the scalpers do. Let's see if Bandcamp doesn't crash

looks like they got some bundles too.

Finally came in the mail! Really excited to listen to it

Oh boy, what a record. Lyrically it's so destructive but I'm always satisfied after giving it a listen.

Top row:

Cold Gawd - God Get Me The Fuck Out Of Here

Alison Goldfrapp - Love Invention

The Jam - Sound Affects

Bottom row:

Cranes - EP Collection, Volumes 1 & 2

Cranes - Self-Non-Self

The Cold Gawd album was new to me and I bought it on a whim after hearing it play at a record store I love. It's an awesome album though and I recommend it to anyone who likes the heavier side of shoegaze.

I also highly recommend Alison Goldfrapp's solo album. Lots of dancey fun and will put you in a good mood.

The other 3 I've just been needing in my collection for a long time.

For me it was probably Thrice's Alchemy Index. I paid around $130 for it and I don't think I can afford to make any more record purchases like that again lol
