Perhaps inevitable, but oof, talk about kickin' somebody when they're down.

Retired NFL star Michael Oher, whose supposed adoption out of grinding poverty by a wealthy, white family was immortalized in the 2009 movie "The Blind Side," petitioned a Tennessee court Monday with allegations that a central element of the story was a lie concocted by the family to enrich itself at his expense.

There's a bit too much pearl clutching and ignoring some of the more clear eyed reasons why inertia rules the day and college football continues as it is, but if forced to say whether I agree with the premise of the article, then yes, I do.

Gotta give the old U Chicago president his due credit for this gem, though: "I am for exercise, as long as I do not have to take any myself."

It'll be interesting to see what penalties they apply after the season. Or if anyone at Michigan cares.

Now that we're only 2 weeks out its time to stock up on face paint and cheap beer. But we're also setting up a new community here so I guess I'd like to just discuss expectations for Saturdays in the fall here on lemmy. We're still a pretty small community (~800 users now) and I would imagine many if not all of those users are r/cfb refugees. Personally I loved r/cfb's game threads as often my job keeps me from watching or listening to the game. So I could keep the game thread pulled up on my phone and the google score pills to check when I have a brief moment. Obviously changes to that work flow have brought me here but I would like to replicate that experience if possible. I also enjoyed some of the weekly threads (particularly trash talk Thursday) and the r/cfb poll. But recognize that at our size many of these will be pipe dreams for a few seasons.

I've gone ahead and created a poll through google sheets (bleugh) that should do fine for us as a small community. Note that this poll is far from fool proof, so please double check your submissions and don't break it if we can avoid it. Link to the poll here. Link to the results (which I'll post Fridays? Thursdays?) here.

If you have other ideas or tools for Saturdays post them or discuss them here. Speaking of, I want to make sure everyone knows of cfb.guide which is invaluable for scheduling your Saturday.

Sounds like FSU and Clemson weren't on board with adding the two west coast teams.

I'm completely sure it was only athletes in Iowa who were gambling. So sure in fact, that I don't think any other state needs to investigate at all, nosireebob.

Honestly, this TCU team could be more talented while losing more games. Last year was crazy.

Sources: ACC Presidents met tonight and the pursuit of Stanford and Cal for conference membership has “hit significant roadblocks.” There’d always been long odds because there wasn’t ever a significant value add. Source

Washington State AD Pat Chun: "There's a century of history that has gone by the wayside because this conference has mismanaged itself on a bunch of different levels. And when you have poor leadership, one of the outcomes is failure. That's what has happened to the Pac-12."

I mean this is always a fun one. Bonus points if you're brave enough for score projections. I'll start for Tennessee.

  • UVA: W
  • Austin Peay: W
  • Florida: W*
  • UTSA: W
  • SCAR: W
  • TAMU: W*
  • Alabama: L*
  • Kentucky: W
  • UConn: W
  • Mizz: W
  • UGA: L
  • Vandy: W

Florida, Texas A&M, and Alabama are my swing games. Florida looks like a favorable match up for us as it stands, but having grown up through the early 2000's I just know that uf has some of that swamp magic. ATM is just a massive question mark for everyone from every perspective right now, certainly glad they play Alabama the week before they play us. Unfortunately we play Alabama in ttown the next week. Speaking of if there are any other vols reading this please help me flood Danny White's inbox with requests to return TSIO to a color clash game by wearing orange in Tuscaloosa this year. If that game looks good, or if we even pull out a win, we can start talking about the UGA game. Until then let's take this one game at a time. Overall I've got us going 10-2 with 8-4 being the absolute worst case for us to still have a 'decent' season. Also shout out to the scar game, I bet that one's going to be a barn burner.

A lot of love for Washington and Texas Tech, interestingly enough.

Notre Dame is an independent in football, but they’re in a conference for everything else, why aren’t we all independent for football? Take the 64 teams in Power Five and make that one division, take the 64 teams in Group of Five, make that another division. We play for a championship, they play for a championship and no one else gets affected. Our sport’s different than everybody else — we only play once a week, travel’s not a big deal for football, but it is a big deal for other sports. So that’s my theory.”

ACC considering adding Cal, Stanford & SMU or just Cal & Stanford, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. 1st report by @RossDellenger. SMU has a $10 million exit fee to leave AAC w/less than 27 months notice so that number could double. In May, ACC source told @ActionNetworkHQ league had no interest in expanding. “We already have too many mouths to feed,” source said then. Today? “Obviously a lot has happened in the past few months”

Not gonna lie, I remain interested in the walking intersection of sports and "famous for being famous" and East Texas affluenza that is Johnny Manziel. Actually saw him play once, in Canada.

As an aside, CFL football is awesome when the offenses are humming, but endless two-and-outs are mind-numbing. Some might even say 33% more boring than an equivalent game in the US.

If you thought USC in the B1G was bad, get ready for Atlantic Coast Cal.
