Well, I guess Canadians who want to watch Prodigy are out of luck. There certainly isn't any other way to see it. It's just impossible.

A Virtual Private Network can do wonders…

I know everyone here probably knows how to pirate things from overseas, but having the show available on a streaming service like Netflix or SkyShowtime is going to put it in front of more people who might like it and make it easier for them to recommend to their friends. I'd say the same thing no matter how long the wait was, to be honest. It took a good while for Summer Camp Island S6 to show up here in the U.S. but now it gets regular reruns on cable, which is what lets kids and teens find it. Better that the show's reach isn't restricted to people who already know what they're looking for.

CTV used to be the best at exposure by putting Star Trek on both streaming and linear - not sure why they're dropping the ball on this one.

I think it goes without saying - or it should - that watching it through official channels is better for the longevity of the show, if that's an option where you live.

not sure why they’re dropping the ball on this one.

My best guess is that the season 1 ratings on the CTV Sci-Fi channel weren't great, and despite being a massive media conglomerate, they don't really have a "kids' channel" to put it on instead.

I would have said Teletoon is a no-brainer to put it on, but they're owned by Corus/Shaw. I'm so out of the cable game I didn't even realize Teletoon had been retired as a brand and replaced with Cartoon Network.

I went to go looking at the Bell Media offerings and you're right, they simply do not have any kind of kids channel. Both YTV and Cartoon Network are owned by Shaw. They likely just don't want to try to compete in this space, since Shaw would have the rights to basically everything worth airing and streaming.

~~Whatever happened to Shomi? Wasn't that Shaw and Rogers' streaming service?~~ Rogers acquired Shaw a few years back and have the rights to all that stuff now I guess. They put it on StackTV and sell it through Amazon.

Yeah, Crave won the first round of the Canadian streaming wars, and Shomi was shut down.

There has been no official announcement regarding the launch of season 2 of Prodigy in Canada on CTV or any other platform, including Netflix and Paramount+.

This isn't entirely true. Prodigy-related news releases on startrek.com used to say that the series would be available on CTV.ca and the CTV app - that language disappeared around June.

At this point, I think CTV simply isn't going to release it, despite being the sole license holder

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 3 points 5 months ago

Also @GoodAaron@startrek.website has confirmed on his Mastodon account that CTV continues to retain the licence but the EPs didn’t have any news on when it might run either.

I have to wonder if there are any standard ‘use it or lose it’ clauses that crystallize after a certain point in the contracts for streaming licences.

I would guess CTV would want to do a weekly release, as normal television goes, and Netflix putting out all the episodes at once kind of ruins that. People who want to watch will go online and pirate/VPN it from Netflix. So them putting it on their tv line up ends up being business-stupid.

But why not just stream and also put them all out at once, too? Must they also broadcast on television? I really don't know the intricacies of television networks. CTV has the rights for both (otherwise they couldn't do both), but I presume it's only their own internal policies that would prevent an online-only release.
