I heard it's already launched, is it true?

Yeah, I'm aware it's from Meta so automatically it's going to be hated by people from Fediverse... But I think it's not fair to judge something until we try it directly.

I'm particularly interested in the ActivityPub compatibility, but it's seems like it's not going to be enabled on launch? Can anyone confirm?

NGL, my expectation is very low from this app. The fact that it's not going to be released in EU is very alarming, hmm. Meta isn't known for respecting user's privacy...

The reason why there is only a mobile version is so it can syphon data easier. Do not install this thing on your phone! Your curiosity is costing you a lot.

The purpose of this app is to dig into your private life, don't put it on a "fair" scale.

I also found out that the account is tied to existing Instagram account... and from what I seen, you can't delete the Threads account, only "deactivate". I suspect this is why they can't launch this in EU? Anyway, looking at how limited the features are, this app is a pass for me

That is the initial purpose of Threads I think. Install the app and you will see it on the ToS page/phase of your registration.

I’ve tried a bit of it. Seems cool.

I know this is an extremely unpopular opinion but the publicity can help the fediverse a whole lot. Not even for the media, just driving more people that like this stuff but maybe don’t know about it.

I consider myself pretty tech savvy and have only heard about lemmy in the last few months.

I went ahead and downloaded/tried it. and... I'm not a fan. First, it's mobile only. No desktop/pc/web. Already a negative. Then it forces instagram accounts, doesn't have it's own. There's literally no search feature I could find, so you're stuck looking at whatever the default feed is, or I guess who you follow? But can't find people to follow unless you search their name directly.

There's no activitypub support currently I think.

all in all I don't like it.

Word I got on the grapevine was they may not be rolling out the federation for the first month or three, which would be understandable if true. It would mean much less of a learning curve for early adopters. Don't wanna scare 'em, this place is admittedly a little mindbending at first.

But isn't it supposed to launch..uh..tomorrow? How the hell does it not have a search feature? Why are we bothering with accounts on another platform, making the move for new users theoretically even more of a pain? This sounds like it's not even done yet.

They 100% rushed launching it, after looking at how elno screwed things in Twitter. There's no better time to launch this, now or never. I think

They 100% rushed launching it

Which I find a bit stupid.

They have one shot at converting launch hype into a user base.

Yes, twitter is a bit of a shitshow right now, but I doubt it will get any better in the coming months. So I don't see the urgency to push out a half-baked product.

But after the VR money bonfire they have had for the past two years, I think they are desperate for a new offering to gain some traction.

it launched today lol. but yeah. if there's search I couldn't figure it out. it only seemed to search users, not posts.

There’s no feed for only people you follow, the feed isn’t chronological, the UI feels like it’s wasting a lot of space… It’s not great. Twitter wins in UX, but I’d rather everyone move to Mastodon. Moving from Twitter to Meta seems like just picking the lesser evil.

[–] stackPeek@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There’s no feed for only people you follow

That's like the most basic feature in any social media LOL why did they ditch it

Like i said before, the definitely rushed the launch

They will add it soon later, the platform just launched a few days ago and same for entering the EU I guess.

Meta has been as instrumental (if not more) in the recent right wing extremist/anti-intellectual wave that has been plaguing the world for the last decade. So many governments worldwide have gone to racist extremists.
