Not really. Macron was hoping for a centrist win from calling snap elections. Instead, the left won - which while less abhorrent to Macron than the far-right (thank God), is still not what he was looking for.

Tbf coming in second with how much everyone in France hates him right now is probably a relief to him.

Don't worry, his party and the media are already discussing how the center can simply grow by picking apart the PS (center left) out of the left alliance, obviously.

Thr left definitely did not win. They have the most seats, but only 40 seats seperate them from the RN. Macron's centrist coalition will pick which side to go in into coalition with, and history shows time and again the centrist liberals will always elevate the fascists when push comes to shove.

Always is a very strong word, which in this context doesn't hold much weight.

Could you explain this like I'm five? I have not followed this election. What gamble?

After the European elections in which the far right in France got a really high proportion of votes, Macron called a snap election, meaning that the parliament has been reelected. Many were shocked about this as Macron apparently expected the people to now "face the consequences" and "stop protest voting" as he shows what this could lead to(?) but people called it unresponsible to expect that now they would get different results in the national election.
Anyways, against expectations the left was the surprise winner of this election and not the far right (which is better than most expected). But as @PugJesus@lemmy.world points out, it's also not really what he (probably) wanted (getting a majority himself -> he's center to center-right).

Thank you for taking the time. I knew some of this info, but I certainly don't know the party names. But from your description of how things played out, I could figure out which one is which in the meme.
