I'm all for a good sandwich with delicious sauces, but how are you supposed to eat this? I would argue it's not a sandwich once the bread is too soaked to pick up. It's not even about getting your hands wet and gross, which is bad enough, but the real problem is the lower slice won't have any structural integrity. Shits gonna fall apart and all into your lap.

Instead, I recommend using a knife and fork so you can chop it up like a salad, and it can complete the set as a "soup sandwich salad."

I agreed that it’s losing its benefits of being a sandwich when soaked like that, but there are many sandwiches that are wet or require knife & fork.

...require knife & fork.

Sort of....
Depending on the company and setting, perhaps. But they can still be eaten with hands, provided there's a napkin and preferably a little water around, afterwards.

As someone who grew up in Philly, we have a local/regional sandwich that's a whole lot messier than that Chicago one. I think once or twice in my life did I see someone eating it with a knife and fork, and I suspect they were from out of town.

What regional Philly sandwich? I’ve only had cheesesteak, pork & greens, and some scrapple breakfast thing. Not a fan of scrapple

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@lemm.ee 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Cheesesteak, bingo. A greasy, unhealthy steak sandwich with lots of cheese... or cheese-product, haha.

Never heard of pork & greens being a Philly thing, especially. Scrapple's pretty good when made right, sort of like smashed "homefry" potatoes, but the ingredients are kinda nasty, like hotdogs, etc.

[–] distantsounds@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The roast pork and broccoli rabe is my go to over the cheesesteak every time I’m in Philly. I can’t remember the name but there’s a place at Reading Terminal Market that has one I dream about

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You might be thinking of Dinics.

[–] distantsounds@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Yes!! That’s it

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

I have not had the Torta, but I've eaten the other two and they weren't soaked in soup. I also like a good french dip, but there you dip the bread a little at a time.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Shits gonna fall apart and all into your lap.

I'll tell you what I tell my 3½ year old and five year old: "Lean your chin over your plate [god-damnit!]." (The god-damnit is said quietly in my head, lol.)

I always have a plate and eat above it no matter how structurally sound my sandwich is. Crumbs and little bits always find themselves falling off. I highly recommend it.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

If I did that, my dog wouldn't love me anymore.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Well then you have no issues with this sandwich I guess 😄

[–] MR_GABARISE@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

I'd presume you'd eat it like a hot chicken sandwich, ie fork and knife.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

I don't think my mental image of a chicken sandwich is the same as yours, but I do enjoy an open faced tuna melt, which I find is easier to eat with a knife and fork. But I don't really consider that a sandwich, either. It's more like chipped beef on toast, which I suppose you could argue is also a sandwich.

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I have never heard of eating a chicken sandwich with a fork and knife, hot or otherwise.

[–] tomas@aggregatet.org 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Are we going back to definitions territory or are you willing to explore new ways of eating your food?

By the way, for the particular case of the chicken sandwich the knife might turn out to be handy if the chicken is alive ;)

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 2 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I'm not really sure what you're asking or where the dichotomy is. Are you referring to a specific type of chicken sandwich in your region which is typically eaten with utensils? Because I have never in my life seen or heard of someone eating a chicken sandwich with utensils. I'm sure there are people who don't like getting their fingers messy who do so, but they are the odd ones out.

[–] tomas@aggregatet.org 1 points 5 months ago

Just kidding. I don't see nothing wrong eating with cutlery or getting your fingers sticky. Just a matter of preference.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I think I'd have the soup separate and dunk the sandwich liberally, but I can see spreading some on both pieces of bread first, too

[–] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Or thicken it so it's more of a sauce then a soup..or if daring enough a spread.

[–] tomas@aggregatet.org 2 points 5 months ago

I love this!

[–] BubbleMonkey@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 months ago

You could seal the bread with cheese and toast it and you wouldn’t have that problem.

And you could totally still make it into a salad that way if you wanted, it would just have cheese croutons :)

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 18 points 5 months ago

Go back to sleep, babe. There's no such thing as a soup sandwich. It can't hurt you.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Yo I hope you don't feel much about the vegan hot dog thing, that one user was outta pocket. Shit looked good and of all the products to say shit on, the vegan hot dog is the wildest as the substitutes are damn good these days.

Also your soup sandwich looks delicious, tho it looks like one of those meals you need to eschew manners to eat and savor the mess after. I see cucumber, zucchini, mushrooms there, what else ya got on it?

[–] tomas@aggregatet.org 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Thanks for your support! Not much really. On top what you already make, it has a bit of mozzarella, some oat cream and garlic.

I ate two of these and it felt as a complete meal.

[–] tomas@aggregatet.org 1 points 5 months ago

Actually there is a bit more to it. From the cucumber I only used the skin. Also, i used sourdough bread.

[–] Hugin@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Combining elements of both to make something not as good as either.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 5 points 5 months ago

This loser doesn't want a hot, wet mess in his mouth.

[–] NovaPrime@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Holy shit, that other thread was something else. Some people become unhinged at the thought of others doing things differently from them.

This sandwich looks bomb af. Got recipe?

[–] tomas@aggregatet.org 4 points 5 months ago

Hi, I dont have a proper recipe for this. Actually I was doing some sort of mushroom sauce for the pasta but then a few friends from my son showed up for dinner. So I sacrificed my pasta and got creative with the bread and some extra ingredients.

[–] Digital_man@lemmy.one 2 points 5 months ago

Soup Sandwhich, amazing.

I came here not unhinged, but more like "WTF ,mate?" .

But shoot i'd try this beautiful bastard of a sammich!

[–] MadBob@feddit.nl 2 points 5 months ago

Recipe? You make soup, you chuck it on a butty, bish bash bosh.

[–] RagnarokOnline@programming.dev 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I dunno about this… I see a wet cucumber and I’m runnin

[–] my_hat_stinks@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Damn, you must hate cucumber water.

Could be a courgette, that's a much more common vegetable soup ingredient.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

I randomly had a Mason jar and a cucumber (for homemade sushi, not butt stuff) and decided to do some hippy shit and threw sliced cucumber and strawberries with filtered water in the jar. It was actually pretty amazing.

[–] LeanFemurs@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Ordered cucumber limeade once thinking it would be a refreshing cucumber-tinged beverage and it turned out to be more like a lime-tinged glass of thick cucumber glop. It actually tasted pretty good but the milkshake-but-a-cucumber vibe was just too much.

[–] buttPickle@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] RagnarokOnline@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago

O shit 0.o

I love pickles. I don’t think I can live with this contradiction

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago

Ngl, I don't like unpickled cucumber, but I'd try this anyway. With a fork handy, but a good sourdough should hold up to a sauce like that.

[–] Protoknuckles@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

This MAY work, if you toasted the bread super crispy first to give the soup something to soak into.

[–] LeanFemurs@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

As a heavily mustachioed and embearded individual I am 100% down with a knife and fork sandwich, I’d eat this for sure.

[–] Befernafardofo@feddit.it 2 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Honestly... Looks pretty good!

[–] VaultBoyNewVegas@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Why the fuck is this downvoted?? You're only giving an opinion. And I agree, I'd make a complete mess but the sandwich looks great.

[–] tomas@aggregatet.org 2 points 5 months ago

Thanks!

I'm using sourdough bread.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 2 points 5 months ago

So... Would a sourdough bowl filled with clam chowder be considered a soup sandwich? 🤔
