They need to step up the game on pointing out he is on trial right now and then go all in if he is convicted. If they have been saying it already, then they need to figure out how to say it in a way that gets on the news.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 44 points 5 months ago (3 children)

They're trying to avoid accusations of trying to politicize the trial. I can't say I disagree. Much better to maintain silence about anything to do with the ongoing trial, and go ham when it's over.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 34 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Decent people taking the high road is why the conservatives keep a stranglehold on power in the US.

It isn't like conservatives are staying silent about the same topic, why give them more space to fill the public consciousness with lies while waiting for something that is likely to be appealed anyway? Are they going to wait for the appeals to be heard before saying anything?

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago

Are they going to wait for the appeals to be heard before saying anything?

Oh heavens! That just wouldn't be proper. In keeping with decorum they must wait an appropriate amount of time out of respect. Surely the American people will understand who is truly the more ethical choice.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 4 points 5 months ago (2 children)

The difference between good and evil is that good follows rules and evil doesn't. And the fascists are always going to spread lies, whether there's a trial going on or not. Making remarks about or adjacent to the trial while the trial is going on just gives them one more thing to lie about.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

What rules would be violated by focusing on Trump being on trial?

Why aren't those rules being enforced when conservatives ramble on endlessly about the trial being a sham?

Staying silent is giving them more room to lie, because they are already lying constantly about the court proceedings. Saying something isn't going to lead to them more lying.

I think related to trials, Jon Stewart, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and others are far more effective than Biden ever would be in his campaign ads.

The thing is that being a former president with 91 felony charges is quite pathetic.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 months ago

That's just true in general, on any subject. They have charisma.

[–] anticolonialist@lemmy.world -1 points 5 months ago

I'm sure sure who the good people are.

[–] NeptuneOrbit@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

"Please proceed, governor"

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

They’re trying to avoid accusations of trying to politicize the trial.

How's that working out?

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

If he is convicted

I find it hilarious that people still believe there's a rule of law while the US is a full blown corporatocracy masquarading as a democracy. Trump will never see the inside of a jail cell, or face any justice beyond financial (yet never enough to lose a life of luxury). Laws are for the commoners.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It is possible that he could be convicted in at least one case.

If he is convicted, it is guaranteed that he will never spend a day in jail because he is wealthy enough to have the appeals process drag out his incarceration indefinitely.

If he is convicted it is possible that the Republicans will distance themselves from him, but that would depend on how invested his base is on whether his trials are actually shams if a jury votes to convict.

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 1 points 5 months ago

If convicted he would (plebs would anyway) start serving his time while his appeals process works its way to be heard by the appellate court. And if he does time at all, he would probably be out before his case made it for review, which would then only serve to strike the felony/felonies conviction(s) from his record (if he wins of course).

[–] return2ozma@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

They're focusing on the wrong things. Trump's supporters DGAF that he's on trial. They just say it's the deep state/Soros/Biden/whatever trying to stop Trump.

Hit the campaign trail and talk to the people face to face. Not from a stage reading a teleprompter. Yeah you'll have some yelling at Biden and angry but the majority just want to be heard. Then have Biden admin take all the grievances and create a plan to fix them. No excuses about "the Republicans are too strong, sorry" crap.

[–] anticolonialist@lemmy.world 24 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The dog and pony show is gonna end on election day with no one being convicted.

[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 16 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I think he will be convicted in the next two weeks on election interference. The evidence was damning & Cohen already went to prison for the same crime.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I’m not convinced the jury will convict, just takes one closet Trumper to hang the whole thing

[–] Remorhaz@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

There’s two lawyers on the jury to walk the rest through it charge by charge. If there’s one yokel who refuses to accept the facts when it’s being laid bare the foreman will have them removed by the judge and an alternate seated.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago (1 children)

They still don’t have a media plan. 2016 broke everything. The best anyone’s come up with - that I’ve seen - is to constantly hassle voters with unsolicited texts.

Wrong. It’s like we have 25 million dollars lets run the same ad 100 times a day. Wrong!

[–] demizerone@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Mayor Pete is the only person from his administration that I seen that does actually does good media and f'n can't stand that clown.

[–] eran_morad@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago

If trump is convicted, I wanted to see an all-out, balls-to-the-wall pressure campaign to have him incarcerated. Orange jumpsuit, bracelets, no spray tan, no rug. The fascist traitor cunt must be crushed under the heel of Lady Justice. Big baby jesus knows she deserves revenge for having her pussy grabbed over the past 8+ years.

[–] demizerone@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Mother fudger needs to do that shit now and also stop supporting genocide.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 months ago

They're keeping their powder dry. They've been doing it since elected. And through the last campaign. And the one before that. But this time, I'm sure the perfect circumstances will come around for us to use some of this precious powder.

[–] ChowJeeBai@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

Why do the Dems insist on kid gloves and rules of engagement when the Rs clearly ignore them?

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Zero chance that the trial ends before the election.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 25 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Well closing arguments start Tuesday so it's more like 100% chance it ends by November.

[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I think we'll have a verdict by the end of next week. The evidence is damning.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

If we don't then they've probably got a Trump person on the jury and we're looking at a hung jury.

[–] Omgboom@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago

It only takes 1 person

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 12 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Still a win.

In New York, you are incarcerated while your appeal plays out.

[–] AIhasUse@lemmy.world 17 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Unless you are orange. Convicted or not, there is absolutely 0% chance they are putting this malformed traffic cone behind bars.

[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 1 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I can't think of a single legal mechanism that would prevent it from happening. If you know of one, do tell.

This isn't a Federal crime where they have the option of putting him in a military barracks like they did Nixon's lawyer.

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 4 points 5 months ago

They have facilities that are used to keep "protected" inmates (ex. - informants, flippers) out of general population prisons that they could put him in and have him be the only inmate in the building.

[–] AIhasUse@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

When you get to this level of popularity, you get special rules. It's the same as how he just got endless warnings for breaking the numerous gag orders. They don't want to trigger a bunch of riots by his fan base, who would all be convinced that this whole thing is just political persecution.

[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 1 points 5 months ago

Or they don't want to afford Trump any even remotely legitimate opportunities for his appeal.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Hope you're right. Until it happens, he's completely immune.

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

FYI, Michael Cohen is a multi-millionaire

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 2 points 5 months ago

His CFO is also doing his 2nd round at Rikers because he would rather purger himself then snitch on the crime boss. And also something to do with his "don't flip" NDA he has with Trump that gives him a bonus for not cooperating with law enforcement that came to light during this current trial.

[–] kubica@kbin.social 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Is this a spoiler about the results of the trial?

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

No, he’s just going to waggle more fingers because he thinks that’s what we want to see.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON — With a verdict in Donald Trump’s hush money trial set to come as soon as next week, President Joe Biden’s campaign is exploring a shift to a new, more aggressive posture, according to two people familiar with the strategy.

Regardless of the outcome, top Biden campaign officials plan to stress to voters that Trump will be on the ballot in the fall and that no potential court proceeding will change that fact.

“The only way to truly stop Trump is to defeat him once and for all at the ballot box and not expect a conviction to play a huge role,” said Jim Messina, a Democratic strategist who was a campaign manager for former President Barack Obama.

The Biden team expects to send a message if Trump is acquitted or there is a hung jury that voters shouldn’t wait for the outcome of his other legal issues to be determinative, either.

The specter of Trump’s legal travails and the nonstop media coverage around them have also made it difficult for Biden and campaign messaging to break through, said Jennifer Palmieri, a longtime Democratic strategist.

At one point, the campaign put out a news release with the headline “After Stormy Abortion Ban Coverage, Trump Poll Memo Attempts to Hush Panic.”
