In what world is the Wall Street Journal “liberal media”? The same WSJ owned/run by Rupert Murdoch and his son? Or is there another one?

[–] GardenVarietyAnxiety@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago

The word liberal lost all meaning in the media as soon as Trump started misusing to attack his enemies and every outlet just ran with it.

[–] Jessvj93@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Thought Bezos bought it as a mouthpiece?

Edit: ah wait it was the Washington Post

Liberal media

Wall Street Journal

Pick one.

[–] finestnothing@lemmy.world 88 points 11 months ago (6 children)

Why is it liberal media when wall Street journal is right leaning and Adam Kirsch doesn't have any posted political affiliations?

[–] protist@mander.xyz 77 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (6 children)

Because OP is the worst. Perpetually online and perpetually unpopular

I saw this photograph of a printed article someone posted earlier. The comments called that person out for cropping out the actual article, which was measured and nuanced, and using the headline as ragebait. Dude here just elevating to the next level of ignorant

Here's the actual article

Because TokenBoomer is a rightwing shill, posts nothing but anti-leftwing stuff pretending its all #BothSides.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yo peep their post history.

• Pro-Obama voter (plan saved her life)

• Capitalism lead to modern slavery in chocolate production

• Police kill 10k family dogs a year

Pro-Obama. Anti-Capitalism. Anti-Police Brutality.

Maybe you’re thinking of someone else or I didn’t dig deep enough?

[–] Alteon@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago (3 children)

He sanitizes his post history. I've had several interactions with him to the point that I remember his name. Everything in my inbox that has his name says that content can't be found.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago (7 children)

Might be wrong to ask for screenshots since folks should be allowed to have some agency there… when they’re not being abusive… What were you discussing?

Saw this amongst tons of left-wing content and pro-Palestine views, but not sure what the original posts were:

Will keep an eye out.

Everything I've seen from OP leads me to believe they are leftist. Care to cite an example of them shilling for the right?

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Centrists have this thing where they accuse anyone to their left of being all the way to their right.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 4 points 11 months ago

neoliberalism is right wing.

democrats as not leftists.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You’re at +6/-6 at 3hr in. Wonder if those six downvoters checked for themselves or assumed you were fibbing.

[–] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.one 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

One thing I love about being on this instance is I'm blissfully unaware because downvotes are disabled. This is what I see.

American Democrats think anyone who criticizes their actions -- such as opening more concentration camps, continuing Trump's wall (yes, that wall), arming genocidal states, and taking power away from the working class -- anyone who criticizes these things MUST be a right-wing shill.

I'm not joking. That's really what they think. I get it all the time. Hence the downvotes, and hence the unfounded claims about OP.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

Ahh…

So satisfying, on the other hand, to see posts reach +400 without dissent…

Everyone liked that!

It also gives a good town hall kind of feel, like I get a sense of how many people are in the room and how many are shaking their heads.

"liberal" is used here as in neoliberal, which is rightwing and capitalist.

also in the us, democrats lean slightly right of center.

it says the term has lost impact, I agree. Doesn;t mean it should be 'retired' but I get the point.

Other words have also lost impact. 'Democracy' comes to mind. I live in a dictatorship that on a daily basis call themselves a Peoples' Democracy, and half the world agrees

[–] ook_the_librarian@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Liberalism is another one. From Wikipedia

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property and equality before the law.

It's bizarre to see knee-jerk reactions to something if it is described as "a tennet of liberalism". They will rail against the values of the founding fathers who were, in this sense, liberals. Now I don't care too much arguments of founding principles, but to see these people, who claim the constitution is inspired by God, bash liberalism in the context of governing philosophies is infuriating.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I don't think the wrong use of the word has led to it losing impact, just people are more comfortable using it. A lot of people think genocide is like, the Holocaust, but nobody actually needs to die for something to be genocide. It can refer to the destruction of culture or religion within a specific group as well. Like sending first nation children to residential schools. Even if no one died in that process it was genocide by trying to eliminate the culture.

People are just more comfortable with using the word as it is defined as, rather than just the really treacherous stuff like Nazi Germany and Rwanda.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word "no".

Is WSJ liberal? I thought it was right wing corpo propaganda?

[–] qjkxbmwvz@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 11 months ago

News? Centrist (e.g., see their 2021 coverage of The Facebook Files).

Opinion? Oh boy...

Well WSJ is center or center left depending on the day and who you ask. That's the point though, to lend credibility and provide cover for their solidly right editorial/opinion pieces.

OPs meme is the perfect example of how this is supposed to work, confusing the source and shifting the window with people that aren't aware. "This is a liberal media news source, so this must be an accepted opinion in liberal media circles"

[–] Thrashy@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

WSJ was center-right before it got bought up by the Murdochs, and while its news coverage hasn't drifted too far post-acquisistion, its editorial page has slumped noticeably in the direction of Fox News.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 7 points 11 months ago

The WSJ editorial staff called a bike share program "totalitarian communism". The program was run by CitiBank.

They are unhinged conservatives. They just don't always let their privates hang out the way Alex Jones does.

"We will do ANYTHING to get this genocide done without akwnowledging it being a genocide."
