Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim political party and militant group based in Lebanon, where its extensive security apparatus, political organization, and social services network have fostered its reputation as “a state within a state.” Founded in the chaos of the fifteen-year Lebanese Civil War, the Shiite group is driven by its opposition to Israel and its resistance to Western influence in the Middle East.

Led since 1992 by its Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah. Hezbollah's paramilitary wing is the Jihad Council, and its political wing is the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc party in the Lebanese Parliament.

Hezbollah was established in the wake of the 1982 Lebanon War by Lebanese clerics who had studied in Najaf. It adopted the model set out by Ayatollah Khomeini after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, and the party's founders adopted "Hezbollah" as the name chosen by Khomeini. The organization was created with the support of 1,500 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps instructors, and aggregated a variety of Lebanese Shia groups into a unified organization to resist the Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon.

During the Lebanese Civil War, Hezbollah's 1985 manifesto listed its objectives as the expulsion of "the Americans, the French and their allies definitely from Lebanon, putting an end to any colonialist entity on our land". From 1985 to 2000, Hezbollah also participated in the 1985–2000 South Lebanon conflict against the South Lebanon Army (SLA) and Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and fought again with the IDF in the 2006 Lebanon War. During the 1990s, Hezbollah also organized volunteers to fight for the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War.

Since 1990, Hezbollah has participated in Lebanese politics, in a process which is described as the Lebanonisation of Hezbollah, and it later participated in the government of Lebanon and joined political alliances. After the 2006–08 Lebanese protests and clashes, a national unity government was formed in 2008, with Hezbollah and its opposition allies obtaining 11 of 30 cabinet seats, enough to give them veto power. In August 2008, Lebanon's new cabinet unanimously approved a draft policy statement that recognizes Hezbollah's existence as an armed organization and guarantees its right to "liberate or recover occupied lands" (such as the Shebaa Farms). Hezbollah is part of Lebanon's March 8 Alliance, in opposition to the March 14 Alliance. It maintains strong support among Lebanese Shia Muslims, while Sunnis have disagreed with its agenda. Hezbollah also has support in some Christian areas of Lebanon.

Since 2012, Hezbollah involvement in the Syrian civil war has seen it join the Syrian government in its fight against the Syrian opposition. Between 2013 and 2015, the organisation deployed its militia in both Syria and Iraq to fight or train local militias to fight against the Islamic State.

From 2006, the group's military strength grew significantly, to the extent that its paramilitary wing became more powerful than the Lebanese Army. Hezbollah has been described as a "state within a state", and has grown into an organization with seats in the Lebanese government, a radio and a satellite TV station, social services and large-scale military deployment of fighters beyond Lebanon's borders. The group currently receives military training, weapons, and financial support from Iran and political support from Syria, although the sectarian nature of the Syrian war has damaged the group's legitimacy. In 2021, Nasrallah said the group had 100,000 fighters.

As someone who works remote and plays video games, I feel like they’re just being participants in an early instance of a group of people who existed online before cyberpunk shit was an online reality that existed when the outside world wasn’t basically a desert.

Like, imagine a reality where the ultra rich have a super protected and secure lifestyle while the rest of us are one paycheck away from poverty. That’s reality now and it’s only going to get worse as enshitification intensifies. Bottomless algorithms have helped a ton of online influencers/content creators become big/well-known to very concentrated, niche groups. And not to say some of those creators don’t deserve to be recognized, but it’s insane how some of us don’t stand a chance to get their type of financial security. Because content creation is profit for some ghoulish corporations

Do you know what I mean when I say that if social currency were a thing, there would be people who would already start with a ton of social currency to begin with just based on their # of followers on twitter, instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and TikTok? I don’t know how you’d measure what I’m referring to, but it’s a score that makes sense online But it’s also why the concept of money in general is so dumb because there’s so many people working in the background to generate that value and mainstream society acts like they don’t exist A lot of “progressive” influencers are like this, living like kings with a soc dem aesthetic

What's the line between normal and concerning for amount of pickles to eat in one sitting?

I'm talking about a big dill pickle, not those small sweet ones. I'm gonna go with 3. 4 is way too much, and I think 1 or 2 is within the realm of reasonableness.

I haven't been able to follow the general megathread for the last two days because I've been moving to a new place. Did anything noteworthy happen?

I have a weird definition of a fun friday night, I have a 6-pack of beer, couple grams of hash and a manifesto from a local far right wannabe-politician, and I'm excited

From the first couple of pages I'm somewhat happy that they probably at least paid something for proofreading, the punctuation is on point and there's no glaring typos

Everything between the punctuation is written like an essay from a 14-year-old nazi, the re-education camps will require writing classes

They already substituted the n-word with "gangsta rap and the culture it imports"

I'll keep you updated

Money got really tight. I was forced to put some stuff on my card and amidst all the bullshit I was like, "fuck it, I shouldn't be deprived of fun when all I do is try myself." And admittedly, some of that wasn't fun, but me putting money and energy into Palestine stuff.

"To the Americans I say, focusing your threats on Hezbollah and the region are pointless," Nasrallah said. The US said it "would not only attack Lebanon but will attack Iran."

"Your fleets in the Mediterranean do not and will not cause us to fear. We have prepared for your fleet what it takes. You Americans remember your defeats from Lebanon (early 80s), Iraq, and Afghanistan... your humiliating retreat from Afghanistan. He praised the recent attacks by Iraqi Shia militias against US based in the region.

"If an all out war erupts your fleet will be no good, your warplanes will be pointless, you will pay a heavy price."

brak thinking of starting some kind of late night talk show with some pals & buddies o’mine

[–] Fruitbat@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

okay, I wasn't hoping to vent again, I wasn't trying to get upset again, but I kind of need to vent again since it just always something with me, but I need to talk about my dad... .again

spoilerI'm upset about my dad cough because I just heard it again and it sounds very bad.

my dad has this cough for a while now, but it wasn't bad or not really concerning? but ever since he came back home last week. it has been very bad. and I have told my dad how he should really see a doctor a few times, but he keeps ignoring me. saying how it's not that bad and everything fine. meanwhile I could have headphones on with music loudly and still hear him coughing really badly. I could hear him far away when he has his bedroom door shut while he trying to sleep. He might not say it's bad, but it sounds pretty bad and he should at least get it CHECKED OUT

but nooo why get it checked out. it's fine right? it's all FINE. ITS FINE IT'S FINE IT'S FINE. I don't want to cry again. That cough legitimately makes me think of the worst that he's dying. and I legitimately can't not go through that again because I already lost my mom this year when she was dying from copd and sepsis and stuff. I really can't.

and maybe I'm just being overly worried since it just a cough right? just a very bad... cough, but just a cough. that's all. but like. he did almost drink himself to death this year. and that cough seriously makes me worried it something related to his drinking again and. and. that it's not good. like it's a bad harbinger and im getting upset again so soon, so fast.

just why doesn't he want to go fucking see a god damn doctor. just fucking see one. just see one. just see one. just see one. see one. see one. it the same shit with his drinking. he doesn't want to see a therapist or some professional, despite everyone encouraging him to, and even when he sober he doesn't want to see someone. why the fuck does he ignore me. why the fuck does he ignore everyone around him. why don't we matter? why don't I matter?

what the fuck is stability. what the fuck is being fine anymore. what the fuck is the point of even trying anymore. while here I am coming apart again so fast, and back into this pit of darkness. I am so tired and I am tired of constantly trying of going on and on and just for what? I am starting to not want to anymore. I'm just gonna go get some sleep I guess since at least sleeping, I can forget I exist and this world exists. and I tend to feel better after sleeping.

Sonic Superstars somehow manages to be a great Sonic game and a terrible Sonic game at the same time.

Like one minute it's like "Wow that is a fantastic idea for a level, cool!" and then next minute it's like "What the hell is this boss? What was that glitch?!"

Like seriously the final boss design is the stupidly out of place ever. It looks like it belongs in a Mario game.

Also the music is pretty forgettable which is pretty bad for a Sonic game.

But then you have cool stuff like:

spoilerEgg Fortress Act 2 being entirely in reverse and the Metal Sonic boss fight being whatever robot you designed (Metal Nights?!). Also Trip is perfect and I love her.

My Score is 7.8/10

It's a good game but I wouldn't pay full price for it.

AI art of knuckle tattoos that say AI GENERATED, 1 word on each hand. Ironically, this would be hard to make as image generators suck at both hands and text.

There's an old saying in Tennessee—I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, 'Tickle me once, shame on...shame on you. Tickle me—you can't get tickled again.'
