Sorry if there's already been an explanation or there's documentation I didn't read or whatever. I'm just curious how stuff works here

On reddit, the idea was to not use downvotes as a disagree button, but to use it for off topic/objectively false comments so fewer people would see/engage with them

Does voting contribute to sorting here as well? Should downvotes be used the same way, or does it function as a disagree button?

This instance has downvotes turned off. My understanding is that since your account is from an instance that uses them, you can see and use the button, but it doesn't affect Beehaw posts. I believe the intentions are usually good for why downvotes exist, as you've mentioned, but since people will use them to disagree or otherwise spread negativity (think how vote brigading happens on reddit) it's disabled here altogether.
