I understand the intent, but feel that there are so many other loopholes that put much worse weapons on the street than a printer. Besides, my prints can barely sustain normal use, much less a bullet being fired from them. I would think that this is more of a risk to the person holding the gun than who it's pointing at.

What are the requirements for other weapons? Does California require a criminal record check for firearms purchases too? I’m Canadian.

I don't even own a gun, so maybe somebody with more experience can correct me, but I do believe that many states, if not all, require a background check and waiting period. I assume there are certain crimes that remove your right to own a firearm. There are (or were) loopholes for purchasing guns at gun shows where a background check and waiting period are infeasible.

As for other weapons, there aren't such provisions, but it may depend on the weapon. A bow and arrow, hunting knife or machete can be purchased at any wall-Mart. A grenade? I'm not sure.

Shhhh dont tell new york that anybody can by a lathe or a mill. Or forbid A CNC

Requiring a backround check for a 3d printer is idiotic at best. Whats next a flat bastard file? You could use it to form metal to make weapons! Not to deburr or make somthing harmless.

Who pays for the background check? If it's the individual, this would kill 3d printing in New York. If someone else, it would still probably kill 3d printing just because of the extra resistance to purchase.
