I came up with the idea for this community in the shower. What if I want to watch a movie with people from all over the world, and talk about it in a live thread? Live threads for sporting events and TV shows are pretty common, but I don't think I've seen it applied to movies before. The concepts are simple:

  1. Create an announcement post 2-12 hours before you want to host a watch party. This gives people time to find a copy of the movie, if they're interested in participating. If you have the means, you can also mention that you'll be streaming the movie on the official Discord server for those that don't have access to the movie.

  2. Create the live thread 30-60 minutes before the watch party starts. If you're going to be streaming on Discord, be sure to include the link to the server invite as well for anyone that wants to join in at the last minute.

  3. At the designated time, everyone presses play, and discusses the movie in the live thread.

I saw your thread for Hot Fuzz earlier, but I was at work. Had some good laughs as I remembered the scenes for the lines you posted as you watched.

This is the first good use for Discord I've seen! Everything else I've seen the was just endless chatter.

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using an URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !watch_party@lemmy.world)
