phased out by 2032

Holy fuck Mcdonalds plans further ahead than any branch or politician within the US government

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 30 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How the fuck does replacing a drinks machine take 9 years?

[–] YouKnowIt@hexbear.net 35 points 1 year ago

Well they're all franchises so it's less of a direct replacement and more of convincing a few thousand small business owning boomers to change something that's been working for them. Probably takes that long just to make sure they don't try to do a coup

Every restaurant will become a ghost kitchen thanks commies

[–] Facebones@reddthat.com 50 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I know you're being silly, but it's Fun how any negative effect of late stage capitalism is inherently blamed on communists and socialists in a country where the farthest left any actual person in power gets is still right of center. 😂

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 40 points 1 year ago

Ask a capitalist and a communist to criticize each other's ideas, and they'll both criticize capitalism.

Now I can't create my own soda, which is the best part of fast food soda. Otherwise it's just a shitload of sugar I could've just gotten at the store for cheaper.

Those one-dispenser machines with touchscreens preserve this spirit of alchemy, although they're inherently more gross because different sodas coming out the same hose messes stuff up.

[–] WoofWoof91@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago (2 children)

they are also rarely cleaned lol

[–] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 year ago

Rarely is an overstatement.

[–] YouKnowIt@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

How often are the older style individual ones cleaned in comparison though, to be fair

[–] SaniFlush@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago

Can we... ask the employee to mix the Spezi?

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 35 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Bullshit. Also bullshit because the new soda machines, the touch screen ones, always break down. MY TREATS!

[–] zifnab25@hexbear.net 40 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Its crazy because soda is basically free. Sugar, water, and carbonation are pennies on the gallon to produce. There's no real cost to "Free Refills" given that they're selling you 64oz cups for $5/ea already.

Something something, rate of profit declining...

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago

There is a tendency.

[–] edge@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Even then, they’d be saving next to nothing and likely losing more business than they save. So it’s not extracting a few extra pennies so they can say profits went up, it will probably lose them money.

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It almost makes me wonder what the concern is. That shit probably costs less than a minimum wage worker each year.

[–] doggle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They first started phasing them out mostly to look like they gave a shit about COVID, as they could conceivably be vector for infection.

I think the reason they're sticking with it is mostly to reduce maintenance and related overhead from running the machines rather than the actual cost of soda.

I totally see it as a disease vector. With that in mind, I can accept the existence of a set of circumstances where I agree they should be done away with. If it wasn't part of an overarching push to privatize every space in society and you could readily expect to get a refill without being hassled, sure

[–] zifnab25@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago

At some point, I think its just someone saying "We shouldn't give anything away for free" up in corporate.

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

very-smart How to tell if your society has become an overly conservative wasteland of stagnation

  1. Are your ~~citizens~~ consumers willing to give up access to a self-serve soda fountain for increased "consistency of experience"?
  2. That's all, that's the book
[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I read theory

[–] ComradeCmdrPiggy@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago

[–] Sasuke@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago

first 9/11 and now this...

[–] Owl@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm glad they're giving nine years notice. That'll give biologists a chance to study and preserve specimens from this unique microbiome before their habitats are destroyed.

[–] Melonius@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago

They'll establish several McDonald's wildlife preserves where the coke runs like waterfalls

[–] huf@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

you guys had self-serve soda machines? is this what we lost the cold war for?! to get worse mcdonalds than the US?

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago
[–] doggle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

All the McDonald's here already have. I hate it.

Let me drink a catastrophically large amount of coke zero, Ronald, it's the only reason I liked you anyway!

[–] HexbearGPT@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Wondering how many Americans will commit mass shootings at McDonald’s because of this. I’m going to say at least 5.

[–] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

McDonald's has gone woke!
