The second a smoke alarm starts the low battery beeping in my house, I’m wide awake. I don’t know how someone can sleep through it.

[–] railsdev@programming.dev 23 points 1 year ago

I once lived in a neighborhood where someone’s beeped like that for months. How people can live like that is beyond me.

A few nights ago, mine started beeping in the middle of my sleep and I swear I heard a bunch of really fast beeps right before I woke up and I was like *wtf was that", and 5 seconds later a single beep and I was like "oh".

On US Navy ships, one of the first indications of a casualty is that ventilation stops, either via loss of electrical power or on purpose to prevent the spread of smoke. I now have an acute response when any fans suddenly turn off.

I'm so used to the noise of cars that I can barely sleep without it, due to my bed standing literally five meters away from the main road as a kid.
Now it's also impossible to sleep without the sound of the fan of my PI rumouring because it's probably dusted inside the mechanism, like the Servers fans. And if I don't hear those HDDs spinning up at 4 am for the nightly backup, sleep can wait.

The eerie feeling of a quiet server room.

For me it's the cat scratching the carpet. I'm either just in time or too late.

[–] fatalError@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 1 year ago

Put some pieces of soft wood like fir around your place, cats like sharpening their claws on it and it will likely save your carpets and furniture.

I'm pretty sure this is a thing, I sleep with a fan so my girlfriend does too, I often get up a lot in the middle of the night and she hardly wakes, and we even sleep with the TV on sometimes though i don't like it. One time though I accidentally unplugged the fan and our white noise was gone and she shot straight up super startled like I had set off fireworks

LOL I have a fan that automatically stop if it run for too long, I have it for 1.5 years to this day I still don't know why

[–] Sheeple@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's because of south Korean superstition. They believe that a running fan can kill you so fans produce at/for south Korea, shut automatically down.

It's a weird phobia they have as w culture

[–] ColdWater@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

No it's a small Konfulon fan (FS-06)made in China

[–] supercriticalcheese@feddit.it 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Maybe it's to prevent overheating

[–] orphiebaby@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

But that's what fans are for

[–] supercriticalcheese@feddit.it 1 points 1 year ago

Maybe the fan motor needs it's own fan

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I once slept through an earthquake, but the fan stopping will wake me up every time.

[–] provomeister@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lately, I've been really into self hosting. My first thought was server fan, not air conditioning haha🫠

There is nothing like the sound of 2 dozen HDDs unexpectedly spinning down.

Almost me, except I had to get up and check the window, when it sounded like my cat clawing at it. It wasn't my cat. It was a middle aged woman who was cutting my bedroom screen open. After opening my curtains she ran away, so nothing happened. But I had to get my screen fixed. And I was scared to sleep in my bedroom for a month, and with lights on.

There's an opportunity here somewhere for AC/fan/heaters with alarm integration 🤔.

[–] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Time to set up Home Assistant that way 🤔

Smart plug. No integration necessary

[–] GhostWolfAK@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I feel this way about hearing my dog puke, lol
