Hey! Carlos Ruas deserves credit. Not nice removing the byline like that.

The signature and the URL are in the comic. They are too small though. Thanks for including the author's website.

My bad, missed it.

Wasn't the flood thing also mentioned in the epic of gilgamesh from some other older god?

[–] deo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yup. There's also an even older Sumerian myth of very similar content: Enlil (ancient mesopotamian god of air, earth, and storms) thought humans were too noisy and decided to destroy them all with a great flood; I guess he really needed some sleep. Luckily, Enki (god of water, knowledge, and creation) told one guy, probably a priest, Ziusudra, to build a boat big enough for his family and a breeding pair of every animal.

Sounds pretty familar, right? Couple of names changed compared to the one in Gilgamesh. And, other than having two gods in the story instead of one, it's almost exactly the same as Noah and the Ark (of course, there is some compelling evidence that the old testament god in the bible was originally multiple older gods that over time got "absorbed" into one God, hence why he has so many different personalities depending on which story you are reading).

The peoples telling these stories lived relatively close together geographically, and the timing lines up with a period of glacial retreat, meaning flooding was more common due to ice melt, rising sea levels, and and changing weather patterns. Though it's hard to say if they're all talking about the same flood or simply using similar stories and motifs to talk about different floods. I tend to think it was just a flood-happy time in the region, and if an entire village ends up underwater i'd say it sure feels like "the whole world" flooded, especially if other peoples you come into contact with have similar stories of their own.

Very cool. My only source was Reds video (overly sarcastic productions) it stuck with me just how old that story is and how many times it's been retold for differnt purposes.

Also makes you wonder what the myths of the distant future will be. Will these flood myths remain or will it be like the myths of Homer the Simpson.

Had no idea God had a first name, thanks for the info!

...now I just need his address and social security number.

[–] BrundleFly2077@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks, weirdo. I nearly spat out my drink at this and now people are looking at me.

Had no idea God had a first name

I mean yeah... it's Yahweh.

[–] Zoboomafoo@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

My interpretation is that since the Hebrew spelling is "YHWH" and a word isn't really pronounceable without vowels, it's actually " ", the beginning and the end of every word

[–] hihi24522@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago

Don’t forget his birthday and his mother’s maiden name too

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 1 points 3 weeks ago

Isnt He omnipresent? His address is everywhere

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Why would Noah cause the flood..?

[–] uservoid1@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

To get rid of competition and control the economy.

[–] illi@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

He built this big boat, would be a shame not to use it

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 3 points 3 weeks ago

Right, the Vault-Tec approach.
