“Every attempt to block the global system, every movement, every revolt, every uprising should be seen as a vertical attempt to stop time.” Here we might remember those rebels who spent the first evening of the July revolution of 1830 shooting out clock towers in Paris, or the (semi-mythical) anarchist Biofilo Panclasta who, in the final days of his life, is said to have escaped from an old folks’ home and climbed to the top of a clock tower where he “arrested the movement of the clock’s hands, which so carefully marked the passage of time.” When the monotonous rhythms of society’s clocks have ceased and the death march of progress has been brought to a halt, messianic time is the space where new forms of life can be birthed.

It's a good essay. I don't 100% agree with it, but it gives some useful tools for addressing doomerism and other forms of demobilizing pessimism

and one day we no longer let time serve us, we serve time and we are slaves of the schedule, worshippers of the sun's passing, bound into a life predicated on restrictions because the system will not function if we don't keep the schedule tight.

Sundials are pretty sick, get rid of every clock except for those

[–] motherfucker@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

Modern timekeeping really is a ridiculous and complicated system, with highlights such as:

  • relativity drift
  • crooked international date line
  • October should be the 8th month
  • time zone sovereignty disputes
  • the superstition of Numa Pompilius
  • leap seconds
  • Jesus’ birthday change

Towers get an exception cause they're cool, but abolish all other analog clocks just to make old people seethe.

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago

Clocks are necessary for accurate determination of longitude while at sea.

[–] Egon@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago

No real world use? I dunno, I'm quite a fan of calculating longitude with something other than dead reckoning
