What am I protecting my chainstay from?
The chain slapping against it, chipping the paint and making a lot of noise.
All my homies with hardtails have been wrapping their drive-side chainstay like this for decades.
My hardtail fat tire ebike came with a chain stay protector. I've never had one before but it was easy to see what I've been missing.

Clean the stay and the tube thoroughly before. A small bit of rock or metal dust between the tube/tape and the stay will jiggle back and forth and wear down the material of the stay, creating the potential for a fracture.
I also wrap my u-lock this way.
