The reason the 'So, your family suffered under "communism." Why should I care?' meme works so well is that the people communism oppressed were slaveowners, perpetrators and collaborators of genocide, and similar ghouls and/or goblins. You can't really go and kill children with their mothers and laugh it off the same way, doesn't work like that.
Somehow, even while they were killing, imprisoning, exiling, and otherwise oppressing these gusanos, life expediencies were skyrocketing so much that it doesn't show up in those statistics whatsoever
