I went from couch to 160 mile solo gravel ride in about 4 months and the thing that got me there was that I found a long trail and I stuck to it. Each long ride I'd aim to just go a little further, and I'd adjust how much water I was carrying, food, etc.
Sounds boring but it's actually pretty fun, knowing where all the benches and portapotties are and using them as landmarks, hitting up all the same boring landmarks but then one day you get to the next city, new milestone.
Might be a fun take on cycling
I second cycling. If you have the time for it, it's a great way to spend an early morning on a day off. It makes the surrounding area seem so accessible and interesting in a way that a car just doesn't.
For example, I like to go to our city pool sometimes on the weekend. It's about a 5 mile / 15 minute drive. On a bike it's only about 30 minutes, so timewise it still works out for me. But I enjoy the mental relaxation that cruising through the neighborhood to my destination brings.
