Hello everyone,

Following the recent discussions on !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com and !lemmyworld@lemmy.world , it seems that people realize that Lemmy.world is subject to European laws, and not the US ones.

This is another event where US citizens seem to be looking for an instance that would adhere to their "legal culture", the previous one being the US elections, where the topic was discussed everywhere, before getting channeled into !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world

I don’t know anything about Dutch or Finnish laws, but I’ve seen many recent articles about people arrested in Germany for their social media posts that were considered hateful or violent (which is frankly a culture shock to me as an American), so I can see why some of the posts on Lemmy in the past week would be concerning.

https://lemmy.world/comment/13870047

So, the question is: could Discuss.online become that instance? And host US-focused communities like "AskUSA", "USPolitics", "USFinance", this kind of things?

I am mostly asking because there's no secret that the DO admins aren't the biggest Lemmy fans, so would you guys be okay if your instance would get promoted, potentially causing an influx of users and communities, some requiring moderation?

I am not sure where to post this - most of us on this instance probably use it as a "general-purpose" one to launch ourselves into the wider Fediverse, with only a few communities being here locally. @jgrim@discuss.online @lazyguru@discuss.online

I would like for Discuss.Online to defederate from the troll instance hexbear.net, to protect new users (who don't understand how communities work, local and remote) from being exposed to their toxicity and therefore drive people away from the Fediverse. I personally made the mistake of responding to a comment in a post in !ChapoTrapHouse@hexbear.net and continued to receive messages from them - each one triggering my Notifications - for WEEKS afterwards (and then did the same for lemmygrad.ml as well, though iirc at least one and probably both of these occurrences likely was from my prior instance StarTrek.Website, which I moved from to here b/c of Discuss.Online's much better admin practices e.g. significantly higher uptime). I almost quit the Fediverse entirely after those incidents, though thankfully I recalled how Kbin used to be better, less toxic I mean, than Lemmy, and pushed through to figure out how to block things, especially instances (which sadly does absolutely nothing to stop this effect, when in communities not actually located on those instances, since the "instance block" is more of a "community mute"). Though I am by no means the only one that this has happened to - it seems to continually occur for each new user that joins here, almost like a rite of passage to learn which instances need to be avoided, and yet we don't even know how many users this is turning away from us.

Such instances and hexbear.net in particular either cannot or will not control their users, and in fact there is evidence that the admins themselves have lied to other instance admins, at which point any further communication to them is already known to be in bad faith (admittedly, the other possibility is that the admins lied to their own userbase - although is that really much better?). You can read all about this particular incident in e.g. https://discuss.online/post/13387124 (and others e.g. https://lemmygrad.ml/post/6205969), although it is only the latest in a long string of such occurrences. Another good read is https://discuss.online/post/434998, which cites several examples that caused the admins of Lemmy.World to defederate from hexbear.net (much of the content has since been deleted, either by mods or by the OP, but it should be visible somewhere e.g. the modlog?). Many of the largest instances across the Fediverse have eventually already defederated from this instance - e.g. https://sh.itjust.works/post/4279462 and https://lemmy.ca/post/3326347 and https://feddit.org/post/41472 (I don't understand German so that's the best example I could find there).

Personally I want very badly to defederate from users on lemmy.ml for similar reasons, and also the admins there likewise are not transparent with their policies of saying one thing while doing another, in particular site-wide banning people for comments that they did not know were taboo, b/c it says so nowhere that people know how to read what topics are prohibited (e.g. in the sidebar it just says "A community of privacy and FOSS enthusiasts, run by Lemmy’s developers", and there is a link to "What is Lemmy.ml", which is just a broken link). That one I understand may be more problematic to defederate from although I think there is a strong case to be made for it. Fwiw, it was recently discussed in https://discuss.online/post/13727946 including that incident where a mod told a user that they (the mod) wanted to kill them (the OP) (sadly, I am not anywhere close to joking or exaggerating - read it for yourself e.g. at https://hexbear.net/post/3706906/5518427 where even the unremoved comments from the mod doubles down with "nono I don't want to shoot for pointing that it's a game, I want to shoot you because...", and then later tripled down still further, e.g. stating “I hope you die soon.”). To be clear, the incident occurred on hexbear.net, but the mod is from lemmy.ml - those instances are often intertwined, along with lemmygrad.ml.

But regardless of what happens with lemmy.ml, the case for defederation from hexbear.net seems much more clear and straightforward - and really, why not?

Tangentially, @Blaze@feddit.org does great work in enticing mainstream Redditors to come to Lemmy, and is looking for an instance to recommend that new users to come to, though the current federation with hexbear.net is a dealbreaker. I don't know if you would even want to see a large influx of new more mainstream users from there, and to be clear I think that Discuss.Online should defederate from hexbear.net (and possibly lemmy.ml) either way, but I wanted to point out how defederation is not necessarily a bad thing i.e. in terms of decreasing available content, as doing so would open up new possibilities to be more welcoming to an audience that gets turned away by such toxicity and political extremism as is constantly flooding over here from those sources, i.e. increasing content overall.

Discuss.Online is such a welcoming instance, I feel, and you are doing a fantastic job of being admins, e.g. as evidenced by the uptime stats, and upgrade timeliness, etc. The only downside is being willing to host such toxic content on this instance that derives from other sources that are not nearly so welcoming and friendly - and yet are presented side-by-side here along with all other content as being equally worthy of attention (especially when browsing by All, which I note is the default behavior, rather than Subscribed). We can do nothing to control others, only ourselves, but deciding to remain federated with them is a choice that reflects poorly on us imho (even if most of us have already blocked or otherwise avoid those communities personally, being more tech-savvy than your average mainstream Redditor), so I hope you will give strong consideration to these points, regardless of whatever the outcome may end up being. And thank you in advance for that!:-)

I was hungry asf.

But damn, got some white rice, beef, and some veggies (cucumber and radish) all with that signature sauce that Vietnamese restaurants usually have (I'm not sure what it's called).

And by the Vietnamese gods, it was amazing.

Just like eating it at the restaurant itself; still nice and warm (but then again, the restaurant was nearby my area).

Came in a white plastic container or whatever material you call it.

Oh God, I look back fondly on that meal I had almost an hour ago today.

I was soooooooooooo hungry too and now I'm not.

How is it that you can feel horrible when you're hungry (physically and emotionally) and then feel content and all is right with the world after having eaten?

Dunno... Just don't know...

Anyway, how you all doing? And what did you all eat today (so far)?

Hey everyone! Ill be starting to share updates on the frontend visuals here like I was doing with Pangora before it got merged into Sublinks

Starting off with some progress I've been making on the Home Page. Been taking things I enjoy from both alternate frontends such as Photon and Tesseract, as well as Misskey forks like Iceshrimp and Sharkey.

People who followed me as I was developing Pangora might recognize a lot of similar design decisions

Still in progress but ill try to share new progress at least every couple of days when I work on it with new additions

The left sidebar can be collapsed to show only icons for people who want a bit more space for post cards

Hovering over an option adds a popover saying what it is

In addition when you scroll down the navbar shrinks a bit to give you more space for post cards. On mobile the navbar hides completely when you scroll down and then shows again when you scroll up

The frontend is still heavily in progress so things may change a lot still before release as I refine it. If you've got suggestions feel free to give me them

I remember when I was on Reddit I would check it several times a day. But with Lemmy there doesn't seem to be that much content popping up to justify that. I'm finding myself less addicted to the platform genre.

How often do you check Lemmy? What do you subscribe to that keeps you coming back?

You’re not going to believe this: I was permanently banned from both these subreddits, r/SFXLibraries and r/AudioPost for “piracy efforts”! Where or how did I commit “piracy” in any of these reddit posts?! Only adding insult to injury; I got immediately muted from contacting both subreddit admins for 28 days! I didn’t even mention anything pirate-related like keygens or torrents. I just asked for help to locate these sound effect and music libraries to their source websites. Adding more insult to injury, after my 28 day mute expired, they muted me again for ANOTHER 28 days!

The same thing happened on r/TooAfraidToAsk when I tried to re-erect the page after Reddit's spam filter removed it after I was shadowbanned. r/TooAfraidToAsk claimed I'm now perma-banned due to breaking "Rule 3". How did I even "soapbox", "troll", "moralise", "sealion", or "spam"? They accepted it the first time and now I get booted for good this time?! It seems just asking this type of question is too dangerous!

So therefore, I need to ask somewhere else. But even those other sites aren’t fairing any better! - My Deviantart journal included. How can something as simple and innocent as asking where I can acquire this audio file (stock music for Most Shocking Police Videos or Sound Ideas/The Hollywood Edge sound effect) be treated as… a full-scale felony?!

I thought hard and I tried , and low and behold: they all deleted my question or block me because I “attempted illegal shares” or the question doesn’t really fit their forum site. Obviously, when there’s a question, IT NEEDS ANSWERS! What is an animation video without music or sound effects?! I have high doubts that Alvin Earthworm ever purchased any sprites or sound effects or music for his Super Mario Bros Z.

Why don’t YOU give me advice where I can seek this answer, because I am running out of places to try. And so far, no luck on The VG Resource either. Speaking of which, did they totally forget about iOS Jailbreaking, reverse engineering, and The VG Resource? These are ways to acquire things without getting into trouble.

I'm just trying to be like every non-profiting animator and make things like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKU2_RfIAc8, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk_3WQRizug and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFMkkkci-rw. These videos I found utilize Sound Ideas/The Hollywood Edge sounds. This guy and little boy uploaded it with no problem! Yet these mod bozos treated me like a worldwide-wanted criminal!

These sound effects are heard and used literally everywhere (cartoons, movies, TV, and especially video games). Therefore, no one should bother to care who’s using them, should they? Looking for one law breaker who’s using something very commonly heard is like looking for a needle hidden in a haystack. So I’m certain the copyright holder wouldn’t waste their time and money hunting down one individual with the “illegally” acquired item - let alone millions of them on this planet . Alot of people have used them for their “crappy” stop motion films and they never had problems. Next thing you know, they’re gonna invent and mandate a license to “drink rainwater falling from the sky”.

I have high doubts that these lego animators ever purchased these sounds. Note: these sound effects were free to download - at least back when SoundDogs was in control of distributing these sounds at that time period.

Why do you think sites like The Models/Spriters/Sounds Resource exist? To help others acquire games' decompiled assets - such as models, sprites (for things like a HUD or UI), OSTs/BGMs (Background Music or Original Sound Tracks) and, of course - sound effects. We've been putting OSTs and BGMs onto YouTube with almost no problems. So therefore, who should bother to care in this situation? This is no different than turning off the music in the game's options menu and playing with just sound effects enabled. And you can cue that sound effect in the game as much as you want to your heart's content. Speaking of which, did they totally forget about iOS Jailbreaking, reverse engineering, and The VG Resource? These are ways to acquire things without getting into trouble.

I'm merely making a homemade movie for entertainment and fun purposes only. I'm not doing monetary things like join Michael Bay and make a blockbuster as eye-peeling as his Transformers franchise.

Prior Accountability Check-In Post

I haven't been consistent with keeping up with my check-ins and even forgot to make a ckeck-in post here for last week so this post is to cover the fortnight we're in the middle of.

I really should automate a posting to help myself out.

I didn't check in last night due to some a evening mess that needed cleaning.

What progress did you make yesterday?

What do you think about having a regular State of Discuss.Online update?

  • Show some graphs of active users.
  • Assess the activity of communities.

Discuss

  • donations and costs

I did a little reading on databases.

I did not work on the Summary Functions and Maps exercise on Kaggle today.

But I did get extra rest to deal with the vaccine side effects.

Ultimate goal is to get a Masters Degree, so I want to make progress most days. Not sure today counts as progress, but I didn't really expect much.

Hopefully I feel OK tomorrow.

Are you working towards anything?

I made a post on a community on the Lemmy.world instance and I can only see it from my discuss.online account, not a separate lemmy.world account. Is this a federation issue? Not sure why this would happen if we’re federated with lemmy.world. Thanks for feedback!

Defed? (self.discuss)

Hey y'all. I'm not a huge fan of defederating other instances but I honestly don't know that hexbear is adding any value to our discussions. So far everything I have seen is trying to be edgy and gatekeeping with manipulative language. They also seem to enjoy stirring things up for entertainment.

So I pose the question is it worth it to stay federated to a seemingly bad faith instance for the few people who might understand and enjoy the lulz.

I would vote no but I'm open to the discussion.

Hello! Was hoping to make discuss.online my new home instance, but I'm having trouble accessing some communities on other instances:

They don't show up in communities search, and trying to go to them directly returns a server error page, with an error message given like:

FetchError: invalid json response body at http://lemmy:8536/api/v3/post/list?community_name=rpgcreation%40ttrpg.network&page=1&limit=20&sort=Active&type_=All

I can access other communities on all of those instances...

... so I know it's not an issue with them being blocked, but it seems like they're not being fully federated either?

Anything I can do on my end to further investigate or attempt a workaround?
