A long while back I was hanging out with one of my sisters and she said that she hears thunder in her head when she gets startled.

Me: "Scuse me. What?"
Her: "You know. That thunder you hear when someone startles you."
Me: "Again. What?"
Her: "You don't hear thunder when someone startles you?"
Me: "Uh, no."
Her: "Oh. I thought that happened to everybody."

Is this a thing? Does this happen to anybody else out there? She did struggle with depression for much of her life. Could that have had something to do with it?

Hi, I am new to Kbin like many, but I have a few questions on usage. So far I've liked it, but I keep getting logged out after a bit of inactivity and it makes me enter my credentials when I decide to comment. Is there a way to make it keep me logged in? I was very used to having reddit be basically perpetually logged in and being able to interact easily without constantly having to enter my credentials.

Second, when I click on links from the various posts, it doesn't open a new tab, and I end up closing the tab when done, and I don't have a tab to return to my Kbin browsing. Is there a setting for all new links to be opened in a new tab? This was also functionality I used with reddit, although I don't know if that was related to RES or reddit itself.

Lastly, speaking of the links, is there a way to make the link on the main page open the actual link to the external source instead of opening the post and comments? I feel like I am having to do extra clicks just to get to the content posted. I am used to viewing the content first, then going to the comments later if I choose to.

Thanks for any info and sorry if any of this has been asked before!

I'm always eager to find new amazing sites i've never heard of, which ones would you recommend?

Will it be when journalists from tabloid newspapers start putting articles on their Facebook pages saying 'after a fallout with the neighbours/school/bride/boss one angry mother/homeowner/parent took to kbin/Lemmy to ask others what they think'.

I suspect that most tabloid journalists would find the concept of instances and different systems showing the same content too mind-blowing.

What search engine do you use? What terms might you use to filter out junk?

Over the past few years I've gotten into the habit of using Google and reddit for general information. When searching I append "reddit" to the terms and tend to get good results. Without appendjng I often don't get back anything relevant. It sort of works if I'm searching for a particular product or company by name but doesn't show me relevant reviews or guides. For something not by name it is just a ton of blog spam and useless articles.

Sometimes YouTube can have reviews but with the way content creation works I have reason to take positive reviews with a grain of salt most of the time. For review sites or reviews on stores I just assume 95% are not/paid.

I have had some success appending something for particular sites. Way more specific to a topic though like board game geek or stack overflow. I've tried "forum" but that doesn't seem to do much.

Edit:

People seem to mostly be suggesting things like DuckDuckGo. There is also a paid option that seems like it could be effective, Kagi.

Also this exists.

in what ways do you think kbin should strive to be different from Reddit?

I'm an "unprepared for exam" kind of guy.

I've been out of school for a number of years, but I still have recurring nightmares about finals I didn't know were coming.

Never exactly the same (tonight was an exam on logical operators? which I know pretty well out here in the real world?) but some things are usually constant:

  • I always find out days before a final exam that I was enrolled in a class I needed to graduate, but never attended because I didn't know it was on my schedule
  • I'm always the only person who is unprepared, and the Professor is always cognizant of this fact
  • I always decide not to study in the buildup, and completely wing it (c'mon, dream me! Get it together!)
  • The exam is always "high stakes" -- meaning there will be very negative consequences if I don't pass.
  • The exam room always feels like it's oriented incorrectly -- this one is hard to explain, but do you ever walk into a room and everything is oriented right-to-left instead of left-to-right?
  • I always wake up right as time for the exam runs out, so I never find out the results

And for what it's worth -- I did very well in school. This never happened to me, so I don't know where this one comes from, save for general preparedness-anxiety.

Sometimes I wake up and read up on the topic ... for next time.

What about you, kbeans / Lemmings? What haunts your sleep?

Hello everyone!

I've launched a few other communities aside from r/AskKbin, and as a result, some of the rules will change as well, please keep reading to learn more.

  • m/Help: A magazine for all your questions (and get answers) about Kbin.

  • m/ModHelp: Are you a moderator of a magazine/community? And have any questions about how things work on the moderation side of things on Kbin? Join us there. It's early stage, we will also soon be launching more initatives to bring moderators together and establish moderator-focused community.

  • m/FindAKbin: Looking for a magazine/community? Join us there and ask it right away, someone will help you find the right community you are looking for.

Linked Magazines listed above are from the kbin.social instance, hence if you are in another instance, please click "Magazines" on the top bar and try searching for these communities manually instead, if you can't find some, give it some time, as they grow, they may appear. Remember federation on Kbin is still early stage and is being improved, it may take some time to appear. You can also try requesting your instance admin to look over if a community doesn't appear on your instance even after a certain period of time.

As a result, any posts that may be posted here on AskKbin that would otherwise belong on any of the above magazines would be removed moving forward and re-directed to the appropriate community. Why this change? To improve the quality of content here and especially as Kbin is a new platform, many platform related questions, for example, may appear and a dedicated community for that is much better than having all that thrown in one community, as we want more broad, general topics discussed here other than Kbin itself. it's one of the many things I have learned from being a long time reddit moderator as moderation when done rightly, is vital for the community's health/growth. Also do keep in mind the mentioned communities above are in early stage, and will continue to be improved. We may also bring more partner magazines!

I'd also like to very much thank many of those who have been contributing to our magazine here, m/AskKbin won't thrive without you and your feedback is vital, so if you have any further suggestions or improvements, please do let me know!

Thank you and have a wonderful day :)

How well do you guys sleep? My current sleep schedule is the worst it has ever been and I'm not sure how I should go about fixing it.

337

Just wondering...

338

If so, do you consistently report it and get the feeling that it gets dealt with? Of course there are instances dedicated solely to being human trash

339

Like for example, how someone thinks because you work in IT you can fix their TV, or how if you're into music you must be able to play any random instrument.

I just like hearing pros rant about about their very niche problems.

340

It is really useful on reddit but here I don't see anything around the left side to collapse so i have to keep scrolling.

341

Whats a song (or more than one) that you like, or been listening to lately?

342

I haven't used Reddit at all since the blackout began. Even if they change course, the Fediverse is growing on me, and I think I'll stay here.

But I think I'll peek in tomorrow to see what happens.

343

I've seen keebinetters, but that feels like trying to say Massachusettsian instead of Bay Stater.

Kay-Binner seems like the most simple and inclusive, but that depends on the fact that you pronounce kbin Kay-bin

Maybe something representing the federated nature? Like Fedizen maybe?

My parents had a flock of chickens and the rooster had clearly his favourite hen (who had the same color as him). He seemed to react every time he could hear her doing a strange cluck, as if his own "cluck cluck" meant "honey, i can hear you, are you in trouble ?".

As a former redditor I am glad to have found a new "home" and I hope I'm not intruding. Nevertheless, we are all a huge migration that is bound to change how kbin works and we're bound to piss off some pre-migration Keebinetters. The fact you guys were here before and not in reddit makes evident you don't want this to become a carbon copy of reddit. From the interface to the group dynamics, please lets us now...

What can we do NOT to ruin kbin for you?

346

Lets make a thread to post our niches that we have found here. Big magazines are ok too.

I'll start: /m/mechanicalkeyboards, so glad it migrated here!

Edit: You can add a direct fediverse link (so that any users from any fediverse instance looking at this post can click on it) with the following two methods:

Click on the "link" button in the text editor, or manually write in the following format (all together):

[ /m/mechanicalkeyboards ] ( https://kbin.social/m/mechanicalkeyboards )

OR (all together):

@ mechanicalkeyboards @ kbin.social

Edit 2: magazine / community names are case-sensitive apparently, mind the uppercase letters!
