I'm getting a bit sick of large corporations a) demanding excess data as a condition of doing business with me, b) allowing it to be stolen, and c) giving zero fucks about it.

What are some things that us netizens can do to make our displeasure known.

Extra points for funny ideas.

I've been looking to move on from membrane keyboards and go mechanical, but no matter where I look literally every mech has some form of obnoxious RGB lighting on it. Are there any that just.. don't have it?

Any Generators, Power Banks, Solar Panels, etc...?

Edit: So I'm gonna answer my own question. I'll probably freak out and would have zero generators to deal with it. Heater is Gas, but I don't know if gas would work during power outage. Cooking, well there's a butane burner stove. I have 3 10000mah batteries, but they have 60% efficiency due to power loss during transfer, so its effectively 6000mah, enough to roughly charge my 5000mah battery once, 3 batteries is 3-4 charges. Then I'd be bored with zero entertainment, along with all the food melting and going bad, very not fun 🙃

Hello everyone and happy holidays!

I'm interested in photovoltaic panels, it's the future and all!

But with the subsidiaries and the general enshittification of search engines, all search results about photovoltaics leads to sites with wildly misleading information, IMO.

I don't care about a 3kWc system with installation. What even is a kWc (I know what it is) and why is nobody explaining how much power the panels would typically yield instead? Per month? During the day?

I guess it is less selling if your installation is generating near nothing in December when you need it the most?

Okay sorry, rant off. My question is, where can I find reliable information about how much panels generate every month, during the day?

I know places have more or less sun, but that's quite easy to figure out if you have the numbers for any place.

🌞

Edit: I don't need a web calculator for how many panels I need. I'd like to know roughly how many watt a typical panel produces a specific day (or better hour) in the year.

Edit2: I am not looking for how to install or calculate a typical solar panel setup. I'm looking for the typical real world output of solar panels around the day and year.

Edit3: got my information, thanks oo1@lemmings.world ! You all can now continue explaining how many panels a home needs or what a kwh is, Merry Christmas to you all!

I've been thinking of potential measures that corporate-controlled authoritarian governments could use against any kind of left-wing information or organizing, and it seems like an obvious one is a sudden, widespread crackdown on left-wing content. In practice, social media companies would collude with the government to:

  • Wipe out all left-wing social media profiles and ban left-wing rhetoric under the justification that it is "terrorism-related content".
  • Block access to thousands of left-wing sites at once and de-list them from search engines
  • Update content moderation algorithms to prevent more of this content from being published or recommended
  • Do all of these on the same day to cause the most disorientation and fear
  • Continually go after the hosts of the niche left-wing news and communication channels that still remain, such as small websites, fediverse instances, and encrypted communication channels. Throw their operators in prison and make examples out of them

In effect, due to the centralized nature of social media and news, the online left could instantly be scattered through the collusion of just a few large corporations.

It would:

  • Galvanize the populist right-wing base
  • Stoke feelings of fear, isolation, and hopelessness among the opposition, deterring action
  • Weaken the left's ability to organize
  • Make it harder for people to learn about real left-wing ideas and stances

Why wouldn't they take that opportunity?

The bulk of online left-wing activity could instantly be wiped out in a single day. Why am I not hearing more people talking about that? Why do so many left-leaning people think sites like BlueSky will save them? Do they really think they are resisting by using centralized social media platforms? The corporatocracy has complete control over all of the infrastructure...

In my opinion, every influencer on the left should be screaming from the rooftops every single day that the most productive thing you can be doing is talking to people, building connections, and organizing in the real world, because our platform on the Internet could vanish instantaneously.

Anyway, I hope I'm wrong, but it feels like something that could easily happen. What are your thoughts?

As a British lad, I've been keeping tabs on the news about this guy and the wide support he's getting.

With so much support, surely the public will get him out of jail just to spite the bastard rich kids and their CEO baron fathers?

The Man who was shot allowed a massive corporation to dangle its strings over people's lives, medication being pulled away which is horrifying to me who uses the NHS as my primary medical service for hearing.

What do you think? Will Luigi "The CEO Reaper" Mangione ever get out of prison?

Hey Lemmy!

What's that one song comes on the radio or party and you're filled with joy? Or perhaps it's a carol and it makes you feel alright. What is it?

Then there's the song that makes you flinch and cringe, and you've gotta shut that song down. What is it?

Your favorite and your despised!

Personally 2024 was ok for me even though I was laid off and unemployed for 6 months. Ok maybe it's a little shitty.

If we're in the darkest timeline, what was the last point where it felt there was so much hope and joy in the world?

Some options commonly put out.

  • The day Pokémon Go released July 2016. So prepandemic and we went outside and and a girl told me where to find Weedles. Yep I'm in a videogame

  • The day before 9/11 or when Harambe got killed

  • When Endgame released, culmination of 10 years of marvel moments into a single movie, people cheering in the cinema. Still pre pandemic, maybe there's a trend here

Xmas, new year, valentine's... Seems like the festivities are there just to remind me how much I failed as an adult man incapable of getting company. It's been over a decade since I've felt this way and nothing changes.

Alcohol and porn has lost its charm over the years.

Title, basically. Three Boys, aged 9, 10, and 13, are getting a PS5 for Christmas, and I want to expand their horizon beyond roblox and minecraft.

They're gett8ng one controller each, so bonus points for something they can play together.

PS: I'm not too strict about age restrictions. They know we'll what they are and aren't allowed to say and do, so I'm not very concerned about VoIlEnT videO gAmEs to a reasonable extent.

They do enjoy builders and open world stuff, by the way.
