On Coyier Lane, a little elbow grease goes a long way. Almost a year ago, Bikes for Kids Wisconsin, a nonprofit dedicated to giving Wisconsin residents access to bicycles and education about bike maintenance and traffic safety, shed its national affiliation, branching off from Free Bikes 4 Kidz. Executive Director Kristie GoForth will tell you that independence has come with its own challenges, but it has also given the nonprofit room to grow. And grow it has. Bikes for Kids gave away 2,518 bikes this year, smashing its previous record of 2,126 in 2022, for a grand total of 12,609 bikes given away since 2017. “I would say overall (going independent) has been fantastic. I actually haven’t seen any negative consequences of making that move,” GoForth said. “This year we’ve had just an incredible demand for our services, and we’re hopeful that someone’s going to be really awesome to us and gift us a seven-figure gift.”

The hoiho, or yellow-eyed penguin, won the country’s fiercely fought avian election on Monday, offering hope to supporters of the endangered bird that recognition from its victory might prompt a revival of the species.

It followed a campaign for the annual Bird of the Year vote that was absent the foreign interference scandals and cheating controversies of past polls. Instead, campaigners in the long-running contest sought votes in the usual ways — launching meme wars, seeking celebrity endorsements and even getting tattoos to prove their loyalty.

More than 50,000 people voted in the poll, 300,000 fewer than last year, when British late night host John Oliver drove a humorous campaign for the pūteketeke -- a “deeply weird bird” which eats and vomits its own feathers – securing a landslide win.

The orca had been stuck since 23 March after its mother died, sparking a huge rescue effort off Vancouver Island's west coast.

Repeated efforts to coax or carry her out a narrow path to open water were unsuccessful.

But on Friday, the calf managed to swim out on its own thanks to high tide.

Durham police said while they were not involved in the hunt for the animal Friday, they knew where it came from. A driver delivering two kangaroos to Quebec on Thursday had stopped at Oshawa Zoo to let them “stretch their legs.”

This is when the kangaroo allegedly made its escape.
