The instance you make your account on doesn't matter, as they're federated you can see and interact with posts from anywhere else.

You can check out the Lemmy community browser to see a list of the most visited communities, then search for them in https://lemmy.world/search to subscribe/post/comment. (note: beehaw.org communities arent accessible from lemmy.world, so ignore those)

Wiped the VPS clean, new 22.04 server install.

Deployed using that installer.

Exact same issue. The lemmy container cannot reach the database and continually restarts. I'll post some logs, but they're practically identical to what I posted before:

lemmy container logs:

No errors of any kind in the ansible script. nginx is running, and it's at https://lemmy.name - I get some gateway timeout errors once in a while, but that's all. I assume this is because the lemmy container keeps restarting (as I mentioned in my original post) because it can't access the database.

[-] aranym@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

\c lemmy does return "You are now connected to database "lemmy" as user "lemmy""

Running \dt after connecting returns "Did not find any relations"

Thanks for the help so far y'all, but I'm heading to sleep. Will continue working on this tomorrow.

[-] aranym@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, I can log into the psql shell on the container and connect to the database with no issue. I guess it is a network issue, I'll look into it further tomorrow

The postgres container appears to be running.

(Using https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible)

The ansible-playbook command itself connected to the VPS and completed without any errors or warnings. This is on a completely fresh VPS with Ubuntu Server 22.04.

I created all directories needed in the guide, and the only file I modified was the inventory/hosts file - filling in the username/domain for SSH, domain name, contact email and adding the location of the private key for SSH.

The guide didn't note any changes to config.hjson I needed to make, so I copied that file as requested but left it with the default content. I'm thinking if I missed something it's most likely there.

I couldn't access the web UI and with some investigation I found the dessalines/lemmy:0.17.4 (backend) container is continually restarting, apparently because it can't reach the database - sudo docker container logs <id> returns the following:

thread 'main' panicked at 'Error connecting to postgres://lemmy:PasswordRedacted@postgres:5432/lemmy', crates/db_schema/src/utils.rs:161:56

I'm not sure what to do at this point, so I would be very appreciative of any help with this issue.

They can't be replaced in this case - unless Reddit wants to spend lots of $$$ hiring moderators. As long as they leave that power to community mods, it is impossible for them to stop this type of protest.

I do think there is a real possibility Reddit will consider this a long-term risk and replace them with paid mods.

what it tells me is that it's finally having a financial impact

In a comment shared by r/Apple moderator @aaronp613, Reddit cited its Moderator Code of Conduct and said that it has a duty to keep communities "relied upon by thousands or even millions of users" operational. Mods who do not agree to reopen subreddits that have gone private will be removed.

If a moderator team unanimously decides to stop moderating, we will invite new, active moderators to keep these spaces open and accessible to users. If there is no consensus, but at least one mod wants to keep the community going, we will respect their decisions and remove those who no longer want to moderate from the mod team.

Only time it's happened, I had to refresh to get it to go away. I checked and the username is real, they joined 3 days ago.

Is this a common issue? Any security risk?

Update for anyone wondering: Around 58% of the initial protest userbase has gone dark permanently (at the time of writing).

Many have gone public only to run polls on how to proceed, so that number is expected to increase.

I've heard several advertisers are reconsidering spending with Reddit, they didn't realize the community had this much power over the site (which introduces more risk for them.) Hopefully that has some effect.

[-] aranym@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I just messaged them, but they haven't had any activity on their account since creation (including in their own subs), so I don't have a lot of hope.

Worst case scenario, if I don't get a response in a week I will try contacting Ruud. Having to contact the instance admin directly for this sort of thing seems unsustainable though.

I know Reddit has r/redditrequest, and if there isn't a process yet it seems like something Lemmy will have to tackle in the near future.

The vow to extend the demonstration came after CEO Steve Huffman reportedly sent a memo to staff saying Reddit would “get through it” while opining that “like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well.” In response to Huffman doubling down, a user wrote, “Let them fuck around and find out.”

Moderators from well-trafficked subreddits, including r/awww, r/music, r/videos, r/futurology, r/apple and r/NBA (among many others) chimed in to commit to an indefinite protest.
