Check out bagworm moth caterpillars. Different sorts of bagworms make different style "cases" and while i can't say for sure that this one hasn't been doctored or hoaxed in some way, there are enough pictures out there that look similar enough that i assume the one in the above picture is just a particularly amazing specimen.

Ah. Yeah we have bagworm moths where I live too but nothing quite as spectacular as the ones you've shared. The twigs are a lot more haphazardly stuck into the bag for the ones I usually see, like in the example below:

Look at he. In Russian this is called a Божья Коровка. If you translate the two words separately, it means "God's Little Cow".

I went to the Renn Faire today with the new gf. I dressed as an orc and she dressed as a goblin. I'm a full foot taller than her. We got lots of compliments, people asking for pictures, etc. Had a good time despite the ridiculously overpriced food and drink.

There's a sun spider in my bedroom and it runs around at night waving it's little pedipalps hunting for dust mites and shit and I named it Huckleberry. Last night Huckleberry climbed the drapes and got on my desk while I was playing a videogame. It ran to the edge and waved the pedipalps over the edge and turned around to run away from it. Then it tried again. And again. Like a tiny Mr. Magoo. Adorable. So I grabbed a slip of paper, it hopped on, and I put it back on the floor. Goodnight, Huckleberry.

Yeah! I think they're cute with their goofy looking eyes

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Here are some bugs I have found over the years and where I found them :D

  • This is a chinese mantis bigger than my hand I found in the piney woods of Texas. I used to go there often as a kid and swim in the lake. I still visit sometimes and its as serene as I remember.

  • This is a Fishing spider about the length of a playing card I found with her brood upon lifting a metal hatch to some sort of tank. My friends and I heard about an abandoned power plant out in the middle of nowhere roughly 2 hours away from where we live and decided we wanted to grab a few joints, drive out there and explore it. It was pretty cloudy out with spotted storms so we listened to a horror audio drama (The Magnus Archives) on the way there, it was cool knowing I introduced them to it and they ended up liking it almost as much as I do. Upon arriving we realized we'd have to park my truck on an inclined dirt path (on a rainy day bc we are stupid almost got stuck) in order to keep it out of sight of the highway and walk about a mile to get to the plant. But holy shit it was so worth it, the rain made all the plants glisten and everything was so stunningly green. We also found some dope ass graffiti among other cool artifacts. I have plenty more pictures if you are interested lol.

  • Found this beatle (perhaps a scarab?) that I am not even going to try and Identify on a roadtrip my family took to california to visit my grandmother. I believe this guy was in Mesa Verde, specifically on the rock next to the ladder you take to exit the Pueblo cliff dwellings. I remember I was watching (and obsessed with) avatar the last airbender at the time and thought they were really cool because they reminded me of the western air temple 😭

  • This is a spotted tussock moth caterpillar I found in colorado. It was my first time climbing on real rock. I don't typically climb these days but I do miss it.

  • This is a female io moth found in my parents backyard that I captured for my girlfriend's sister who is an entomologist

  • These are what I think are swallowtail caterpillar munching on my dad's orange tree. I woke up to him actually shaking his fist at them

I pulled a shiny rowlet from a booster pack last weekend. I don't play or collect I just keep it in my wallet and look t it when i want to look at sth cute. I also got a trapinch (which, despite being based on an antlion is ground type not bug type but still bug in my books).

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago
[-] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

rowlet is smol but tuff. A model fighter o7

[-] Antiwork@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

I know it's not a bug, but Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay became the first Black African rider to win the green jersey (best sprinter) today in the Tour De France. I'm super stoked about that!

[-] newmou@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

Hang in there mate

[-] StalinStan@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

This is what you would get if you asked me to draw a bug. Like it is kinda bug shaped but it is clearly a mix of diffrent bugs cause I can't really remember what part goes where.

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

It's a fly pretending to be a bee, that's why

[-] PM_ME_YOUR_FOUCAULTS@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago
[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Ooh ooh can I guess what they are?

I'm probably way off but I think the green one is a cuckoo bee and the red one is some kind of flower wasp

[-] PM_ME_YOUR_FOUCAULTS@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

The green one is a sweat bee

The red one is a Velvet Ant , actually a kind of ground wasp as you've correctly guessed. You don't want to get stung by one of these!

[-] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

a kind of ground wasp

What hell has science wrought

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Oh man, flower wasps are wild. The females lose their wings and hang out on tree stumps looking mean.

[-] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

I have no bugs, but I have an undying love and yearning for you, Comrade Dirt_Owl. I want to marry you one day.
