Won’t it be great when the history books recount how America held off fascism because it memed it away.

[–] spacedancer@lemmy.world 40 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Memes in a way also brought back fascism. Remember when T_D (and some parts of 4chan) started out with Trump for president as a joke?

[–] MisterMcBolt@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hell, wasn’t Qanon just 4chan shitposting at first?

[–] deft@ttrpg.network 5 points 1 year ago

yes it was sort of part of an ama kinda joke

[–] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] tallwookie@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

dont let your memes be dreams...

[–] Thoth19@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I remember back in 2015-16 when his prospects were such a joke. I thought to myself I hope he wins the primary bc it will completely destroy Republican chances.

Well that didn't turn out as we expected.

[–] HughJanus@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

Yes and John Oliver begged him to run

Look what they did to that poor frog!

[–] sciawp@lemm.ee 36 points 1 year ago

Considering that the right-wing memed Trump into office, I think it is only fitting that memes are what destroy them

[–] whatisallthis@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah I immediately thought of being in school reading about Washington crossing the Delaware and how future generations will read about dark Brandon memes.

[–] funkless@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

on the other hand, people probably felt the same about news, leaked correspondence, "yellow journalism" (fake news), crowd baiting speeches, pamphlets, flyers, and marches throughout pre-digital media.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world -4 points 1 year ago

The DNC should release Dark Brandon NFTs to raise money. Like Trump did.

[–] shiftenter@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It Could Happen Here had some good coverage on how this is actually happening.

Check out the 3 part DeSantis' Fashwave Adventure episodes that just came out.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I haven’t listened to them in a while. Thanks.

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world -5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Counterpoint, if it works that means fascism lost to memes

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It makes sense. Memes are propaganda.

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

And while fascism does use humor to lure people in, it also cannot deal with being the but of a joke

[–] PolarPerspective 1 points 1 year ago

That's ironic when you consider who you mean to be talking about, and who actually tried to blacklist comedians like Dave Chappelle.

I'm of the opinion that left wingers say these things because they sound high brow, but they never seem to realize how big of a self-own they're making for themselves. It's like they don't have the awareness to take a step back and look at how what they're saying would be seen by those outside their echo chamber.

Oh well. I don't even know why I'm here. I know you guys don't believe in dissident views. Keep telling yourselves you are the virtuous few in the face of the evil fash. I'm sure you don't resemble exactly what you hate at least some of the time.

[–] jtk@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

Fascist humor is just the first thing any teenage mind would think of to make their teenage friends giggle. It usually just amounts to calling someone a derogatory name. And, just like a teenager, they get pissed when it's echoed back at them. They are, literally, mentally retarded.

[–] snooggums@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I think you have that backwards.

All propaganda are memes.

Not all memes are propaganda.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I should’ve said memes can be propaganda.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

That's not a counterpoint, that's just repeating what they said.

So why male models?

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The original phrasing to me made it sound like the survivors should be embarrassed to have used memes to defeat fascism. When the fascist are the ones that should be embarrassed

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Oh I see it now. Thanks for the clarification!

[–] DrNeurohax@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Counterpoint - yes.

[–] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world 44 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Dark Brandon is an effective marketing campaign that pisses MAGA off and is just stupid fun for progressives to promote. It's sort of accurate, Biden off camera is very assertive and at times mean. I would be too if I was President and trying to get things done.

[–] kitonthenet@kbin.social 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I feel like old men are just kinda like that, at some point you stop caring if people think you’re rude

[–] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Very common for his era for sure.

[–] Spacebar@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I try to not wear advertising of any type. It's a personal thing.

I still love the idea of people pushing back on the Trump merch with something that tweaks the MAGA hats back.

[–] flipht@kbin.social 17 points 1 year ago

We saw a trump style flag the other day. But it said Taylor Swift.

That's the only kind of merch I'm going to buy.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I love the stickers on the site

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

now my president has to be trending? remember when they spell potato with an e and that was a big deal?

[–] tallwookie@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

having that on a shirt might sell pretty well though - might be an untapped market.

[–] OldWoodFrame@lemm.ee 15 points 1 year ago

It is kind of perfect for their goal to make him seem younger and more energetic, and it makes him the impetus of his own actions instead of being "controlled by the far left" as opponents claim.

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago (3 children)
[–] TwoGems@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

It's a donation to the Democratic party plus you get a dark Brandon mug

[–] GiddyGap@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Probably $2 for the mug, $20 toward the campaign.
