What do y'all think of the new Mustang? I think it's a bit heavy, and while it's cool to be the last naturally-aspirated manual sports car, the touch screens in the interior are going to look so dated in 25 years.

SFGate first reported that a self-driving car from the company Cruise found itself stuck in a patch of wet concrete while traveling through the city’s Western Addition neighborhood yesterday. Paul Harvey, a resident of the city, told the outlet that there were no passengers in the car as it remained lodged in the pool of cement at a construction site. The car was reportedly rescued later on by a group of Cruise workers.

“I can see five different scenarios where bad things happen and this is one of them,” Harvey said, as quoted by SFGATE. “It thinks it’s a road and it ain’t because it ain’t got a brain and it can’t tell that it’s freshly poured concrete.”

Cruise did not immediately return Gizmodo’s request for comment on the incident.

Last week, Cruise ran into some trouble with some of its other vehicles. Around a dozen of the company’s cars came to a standstill on a busy San Francisco street with hazard lights flashing, creating a traffic jam as seen in many videos posted to Twitter. The company replied to one tweet, claiming that a local music festival was hogging up the mobile bandwidth the cars needed to operate.

“A large festival posed wireless bandwidth constraints causing delayed connectivity to our vehicles,” Cruise wrote in a tweet. “We are actively investigating and working on solutions to prevent this from happening again. We apologize to those who were impacted.”

Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast saw its valuation surpass that of legacy US carmakers Ford and General Motors (GM) on its first day of trading on Nasdaq yesterday (Aug. 15).

VinFast, which debuted its first two gasoline-powered car models at the Paris Motor Show to accolades in 2018, has been producing and exporting two- and four-wheelers in the EV segment in its homeland since 2021, and abroad since the end of 2022.

The loss-making company’s finances are still in the red with losses upwards of half a billion dollars, but it has several things going for it: a deep-pocketed backer in parent company Vingroup, spearheaded by Vietnam’s richest man Pham Nhat Vuong; a rapidly rising economy; and the growing opportunity to replace China as the world’s factory.

VinFast is “not in a rush” to raise additional capital, finance chief David Mansfield said after the listing, but it is in talks with sovereign wealth funds and other investors about additional investment, which could be finalised in the next 18 months.

$85 billion: VinFast’s valuation at close, beating Ford and GM, both of whom are valued under $50 billion

"Don't hit the car!" In a video shot in Cancun, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on July 27, a woman can be heard protesting as two men in white shirts jump around a vehicle, before hitting its windows with stones.

The car then sped off with the boot open. A suitcase fell to the ground. Seconds later, a woman, clearly a tourist, is seen crying.

The video was posted by a woman living in Cancun, according to her Facebook profile. It was then shared online and went viral, racking up over a million views. Many Mexicans expressed their exasperation at the attitude of the taxi drivers.

The Cancun police announced that the two taxi drivers had been arrested. The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor's Office also stated that they had been charged with theft, damage and injury, while specifying that no firearms had been used.

Other similar incidents since January

This isn't the first time an incident like this has played out in Cancun, where taxi drivers have been complaining that Uber is posing unfair competition.

Incidents like these have broken out since January 11, when a court authorised Uber to operate in the city. The decision ended a years-long legal battle after taxi drivers managed to get the app banned soon after it was launched in the state of Quintana Roo in 2016.

The January 11 decision angered taxi unions, which organised blockades, particularly near the airport and near hotels. Several videos allegedly show taxi drivers physically or verbally assaulting people they accused of being Uber drivers or their customers.

On January 21, taxi drivers responded to two of these incidents, saying they were sorry for what had happened, but disputed the court's decision and explained that Uber was undermining their business and their source of income.

Two days later, the US embassy issued a security alert concerning "recent incidents involving taxi and Uber drivers" in the state of Quintana Roo, indicating that they could have resulted in "injuries to US citizens".

Several associations representing the hotel and tourism industries also condemned the taxi drivers' actions, claiming that they were discrediting the city's image and jeopardising local employment opportunities.

On April 27, the Congress of the State of Quintana Roo in turn authorised the operation of ride-sharing applications such as Uber, Cabify and Didi, thus confirming the court's decision.

But new scuffles occurred soon after, showing the drivers are not giving up the fight.

These incidents have tarnished the image of taxi drivers, already under fire in Cancun as residents accuse them of charging exorbitant prices. Taxis have also been accused of sexual assault and theft.

In July 2022, the authorities reported that "467 taxi drivers and taxi units" had been involved in various criminal activities over the past year in Quintana Roo. The crimes included small-scale drug trafficking, kidnappings, extortion and executions. The taxi unions deny any involvement with organised crime.

In recent years, the arrival of Uber has also caused tensions in other Mexican cities and in other countries, such as India, the UK and France. The company operates in more than 70 countries.

China is now the first and only country where women represent at least a quarter of all new and pre-owned Ferrari purchases. According to Bloomberg, female buyers accounted for 26 percent of the Italian supercar maker’s sales in China (not including Taiwan or Hong Kong) over the past five years. Though we do not have the exact number, 26 percent far exceeds the proportion of Ferraris sold to women in other countries.

The outlet reports that the women who are buying these cars usually include tech industry executives, property entrepreneurs (read: landlords and realtors) and the super-wealthy. Bloomberg says that this information is from sources familiar with the matter, and Ferrari itself has declined to comment on the specific numbers surrounding female buyers in China.

“In recent years we have seen growing enthusiasm from female clients for our products and experiences,” Benedetto Vigna, Ferrari CEO, told Bloomberg. “An increase in women signing up for company-sponsored events like race-car training has been pointing to the trend.

According to the outlet, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan accounted for 12 percent of Ferrari’s total sales last year with almost 1,600 cars. That number is nearly double compared to where it was just five years ago. That 12 percent is actually a little ahead of where Ferrari wants to be in the region. Because tariffs on luxury imports hurt returns, Ferrari is reportedly seeking to keep Chinese deliveries around 10 percent of total shipments.

It all makes sense, doesn’t it? Bloomberg says that China is the global number two spot for billionaires — trailing only the U.S. — and Chinese citizens can be found up and down the list of Asia’s wealthiest women. Many of them are reportedly self-made, as well. As always, social media plays a big role. Douyin, which you can think of as China’s TikTok, often reportedly showcases videos of young women driving Ferraris.

Executives over at the prancing horse seem well aware of this trend. All the way back in 2010, the company’s former CEO reportedly said that one-fifth of the previous year’s sales in China were to women. Back then, shipment into China was only about one-seventh of where it is at today.

I've grown enamoured recently by videos of car restoration after watching some hillbilly dude restore a 70s mustang or something after having had trees grow through it, so watching this was cool up until the restored car was auctioned off to some rich fuck

China should have done the proper thing and appropriated all those retro vehicles and put them in a museum, just deserts methinks.

No major injuries have been reported, so at least there's that.

The Associated Press reports that a tractor-trailer in Connecticut spilled “human waste” onto Interstate 95. Enough “human waste” that cars driving behind the truck began to spin out and crash. One motorcyclist crashed and fell and was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. A number of other vehicles reportedly hit other vehicles, as well as hit concrete barriers.

Also, a different tractor-trailer lost control and slid into a police car that then hit a second police car. But both cars were empty because the officers were out in the muck, trying to help with the other. In total, police say 10 vehicles crashed from the poop spill.

Witnesses gave the police the name of the company that owned the poop truck, which helped them track down the driver. Police say they believe he knew about the leak but didn’t stop driving. They have charged him with “reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and failing to secure a load.”endangerment, and failing to secure a load.”

A Belarussian company specializing in agricultural machinery recently unveiled a Formula 1 car built with tractor parts that can allegedly reach speeds of up to 320km/h (198mph)

The Russian city of Yekaterinburg recently hosted the Innoprom exhibition where over 150 companies from Russia and Belarus showcased their newest agricultural, construction, and transportation machinery. However, the ultimate stand-out was not a tractor, a combine, or an excavator, but a unique-looking Formula 1 car developed by Belarusian company Minsk Tractor Plant. At first glance, it looked like a slightly unusual racing car, but the more you looked at it, the more you spotted similarities to a tractor, which makes sense, considering that it was allegedly inspired by the company’s tractor-building pedigree and built using tractor parts.

The odd racing car features tractor wheels, tractor headlights, and even upward-oriented exhausts, but it’s this unusual design that draws people’s attention. During Innoprom, Russian Prime Minister Mishustin and his Belarusian counterpart Golovchenko were so impressed with it that they asked to take a ride in it, but they were disappointed to learn that the model on display, just like many of the other vehicles at the exhibition, was only a shiny mockup.

It’s unclear whether the tractor-inspired Formula 1 car was only a clever marketing scheme to draw people to the Minsk Tractor Plant stand at Innoprom, or if a working version actually exists. Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda claims the former is true, but several other news outlets report that Natalya Kurash, director of Belinterexpo, a company that organizes and holds exhibitions in Belarus and abroad, said that a working version exists and can actually reach speeds of up to 320 km/h.

It’s hard to believe that a Formula 1 car built with tractor parts can reach speeds of over 300 km per hour, but then again, tractors are not as slow as they used to be.
