I have been using Arch Linux with i3wm for around 5 years for work, on my ThinkPad. I am fairly comfortable with pacman and setting up a distro. I have previously tried Mint, Manjaro, KDE Neon, Elementary, and MX Linux, all for the same use case (Work: where I need a browser, Slack, and a MongoDB GUI).

However, I have been using Windows on my desktop that I use for gaming and the Adobe suite (photoshop and illustrator mainly). With the increasing enshittification of Win11, I want to migrate full time to a Linux system on desktop as well. I prefer a more stable experience on this machine so I chose Pop OS (other suggestions are welcome. I like Plasma). I need some help getting started (I did some preliminary trials on a VM where I was able to run a small game off GOG, but the part I need help with needs some trickery wrt different disks).

PC specs:

• Ryzen 3 3300X
• 16 GB DDR4
• 1 NVMe boot drive, 1 SATA SSD for games, 1 HDD
• RX 570 8 GB

My copies of Photoshop and some of my games are pirated. I'm planning to run a Tiny10 VM for the Adobe stuff but the games will need to run on bare metal linux, off the NTFS formatted game drive. Edit : Most importantly, Content Manager and mods for Assetto Corsa need to work (not pirated), with my Thrustmaster T128

I would be grateful for a guide for this.

Hi there, I will be taking, Red Hat Certified System Administrator and Red Hat Certified Engineer Certifications after the summer and am looking for some worthwhile resources to learn from. Anyone have any recommendations for this? I will get access to some "offical" resources from my work later, but want to brush up - up front. So if anyone has any experience with some nice resources, or videoes that are worth checking out please let me know :)

The four month old KWin merge request by Xaver Hugl to allow for triple buffering has been merged and just in time for the Plasma 6.1 code branching!

Update 1: Thanks for all the responses! I've gotten a lot of very good comments saying I should stick with Mint, and that's sitting comfortably in my top two picks right now. Between new distros, I'm most interested in Arch's rolling release model, as it provides some benefits for me for reasons I didn't really get into here. I'll be considering Manjaro Plasma as my leading "new" pick, and am considering EndeavourOS and rolling releases of other distros as other alternatives. I'll mostly be weighing my options between sticking with Mint Cinnamon, switching to Manjaro Plasma, and setting up my Mint install with Plasma for now. Many thanks to those that have responded, and to any new commenters, feel free to add your own thoughts!

Update 2: After trying out EOS, Arch, Manjaro, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and Universal Blue, among many other options, I've come to the decision that I'm okay with sticking to Mint for now on my main desktop and setting up UBlue Aurora on my work laptop, but might consider switching to Kubuntu or Fedora if I want something similar at work and at home (one of my main draws away from Mint was that it didn't offer a KDE option), or to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed if I must have a rolling distro for some reason. Hey all! I've lurked here for a while and not really posted anything, but here goes.

Title says most of it. I'm a hardware nut with a little programming background knowledge, who built my own beefy desktop about 3 years ago. I started on Windows 10, but I made the switch a few months ago and haven't looked back. I was worried about how much trouble I might have with Linux given my limited software background, and picked more beginner-friendly distros to start out. I toyed with Ubuntu for the first couple weeks before switching to Mint, and I've now been a happy Mint user for several months with no big hiccups. I'm a little bolder and wiser now, though, and I feel like I can still get more out of Linux by jumping to a more unstable and tweakable distro. I was hoping you'd have some suggestions - and knowing the nature of the Linux community, lots of options to consider. :)

Here's what I'd like in a distro:

• Tweakable. I like having lots of settings, and one of the things I liked most about Mint was how much more customization I could get than Windows. I like config and setting things up to my unique tastes, and knowing that many people say this is a weaker aspect of Mint, I'm interested in what other distros have to offer.
• GUI-friendly. I'd like to learn the Terminal, but I'm not confident enough in it just yet to use it for everything. Making my GUI look good and setting it up to fit my tastes are also important to me, and I liked Cinnamon's slick UI/UX features like Hot Corners and panel applets. I don't necessarily want something that imitates Cinnamon OR Windows, or even need anything outstanding in a UI, but having something more than Spartan would be much appreciated.
• Well-documented. I'm still new to Linux; I'll need a lot of help getting used to its quirks. I've been interested in Arch because of what people say about its documentation. A good wiki to follow and readily available answers for my nooby questions may be the deciding factor on whether I stick with a distro and spin/flavor/etc or move on.
• Reasonable gaming compatibility. My library is small, I don't play a lot, and all the games I'm serious about run with only a couple hiccups on Mint with Proton, Lutris, and Mesa. Most of what I do is browse the Internet, write in LibreOffice or equivalent, check my email in Thunderbird or equivalent, and maybe open GIMP or a game once in a while. I'm not so serious about how my games run, I just wouldn't want to daily drive a distro that's handily much worse than Mint for gaming, and would prefer a rolling distro or one with frequent updates, so I have the latest drivers. Anything significantly better for gaming is a plus, not expected. I've been interested in Nobara and Arch for different reasons, but I'd like to look at all my options before I pick one, including other distros I haven't heard of or looked into. Thoughts?

Hello. These questions are self-hosting related, but I feel they do partially belong here as they are also about fedora linux in general. I have a server which is currently running Debian. It has an arc GPU, and no matter what I do, video encoding refuses to work. I was thinking I might move it to Fedora, but have some questions first.

1. How are Fedora's updates? I believe they are about once a year, so how is it to switch between versions? I can deal with annual maintenance, but don't want weird issues causing downtime.
2. Also about updates, how should I do auto updates on fedora?
3. I am currently on apparmor. I know seLinux has more features, but I have also heard that it can be annoying to deal with.
4. I mentioned the arc GPU. Has anyone managed to get video encoding working on it on fedora? If so how?

Edit: also, how is it to move a raid over. It is mdadm raid 5 with ext4. It is VERY important that nothing happens to the data, unfortunately I have not yet implemented a backup, although I do intend to soon.

So I've been thinking, the DOOM game code was made available openly and if I am not mistaken, was based off the linux version.

Is it right to say that's why DOOM got incredibly popular with the "It can run on anything i.e a cash machine"

I say this because we all know Linux is a rock solid and efficient system compared to the bloat of Windows.

If anyone can enlighten me, This is pretty much why you can find DooM on almost any platform BECAUSE of its Linux code port roots?

Consider me a nutcase but I genuinely thought this was the case.

I'm looking to mainly use it for school and was wondering if there's any recommended distros out there for thinkpads.

Hi guys, after some thinking, finally decided to jump on the Linux train and chose Opensuse TW, mainly for nostalgic reasons. I have an Acer Predator PT315-52, and wanted to dual boot it for now, just for safety reasons. I’m sure you all heard that before. However, when I get to the partitioning part of the installation, there are no drives other than the usb installer. The bios settings are limited, thanks to acer, I remember had more options on my pentium 1 computer back in the day. I would greatly appreciate any guidance, advice, instructions really and thank you all in advance.

I setup a micro PC with Ubuntu and plugged it into my TV for media streaming, and was just wondering if there was a way to optimize the experience for non KBM

Using Arch GNU/Linux (Tried installing Debian, couldn't get the AMD drivers to work properly, so I'm using Arch for the moment)

Can run Stable Diffusion, LLMs, and basically all my games at 1440p High to Ultra settings (RDR2, GTA V, Arma 3, etc.)

GPU passhtrough doesn't work for the moment, but I can still run virtual machines. This is a Haswell motherboard, which can be 100% freed in the BIOS over time when we have enough Libreboot devs who can reverse engineer the rest of the blobs. Intel ME is also disabled (theoretically, since you can't actually fully remove it). This is a build that I did for fun, in the future, I'm planning on switching to a Z690-A motherboard with DDR5(can be flashed with Dasharo firmware). If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hello all, I've been reading this community from the outside for some time, and I finally decided to dip my toe into Linux a bit. I have an old PC I was using to run Plex through a Windows install, but this is now a Linux Mint Cinnamon machine.

I have Plex Media Server installed and running, however I am having a hell of a time getting it to see my external drive where my media is located.

Trying a bunch of research, it seems like it is a permissions issue that I cannot seem to shake. Plex is able to see the drive, though nothing in it. I've googled as much as I can, but none of the suggestions seem to help me. I've tried to run the command chown, though I get an operation not successful error in return.

ls -la never shows the plex user or group listed, and I've tried for about 2 hours trying various things and have had no success.

Additionally, the other two drives I have connected are stuck in read only as well.

Anything I may have overlooked?

I've looked at a lot of other immutable distros and I might just end up using one of those, but I feel like taking on a bit of a challenge and there's a few things I'm not very keen on with existing solutions (last paragraph is my idea if you want to skip the context).

Most immutable systems I've seen require a reboot in order to apply system changes. What is this, Windows? Yeah, reboots are quick but restoring my windows and getting back into my groove is not quick. Also, every immutable OS I've seen wants you to opt-in to a rollback. Rarely do I see the full effects of installing a package or altering a config immediately. By the time I notice an issue maybe it's too late to rollback to before the change or maybe I've done a few other things since and I don't want to rollback everything. I would much prefer to make "rolling forward" or persisting changes to be a very conscious process.

I started messing with BTRFS and I think I've come up with a process that will get me what I want, no matter the distro. Please poke holes in my idea. So I think I can use BTRFS to hold data for the rootfs in three different subvolumes (at minimum): root-A, root-B, root-Z. root-Z is my golden image and it represents what I want root to look like after reboot. root-A and root-B are the active and passive instances of rootfs, but which one is active will flip-flop after every reboot. So if I boot with A, B gets replaced with the contents of Z. In the meantime I can do whatever I want with A. Not sure how I'll update Z (chroot or "promote" the active subvol to be Z) but without an update every reboot is an automatic rollback.
