A couple of questions about Cantata.

It hasn't been developed for a while now. Will it eventually just stop working or there's any way to at least port it to qt6, without new features, just keeping the basic functionality?

I have the habit of star most of the songs I listen to, so that it's become easier to, for example, create smart playlists. In the case I can use Cantata no more is it possible to export somehow this data? Let's say that it stops working and I switch to something else (say, Navidrome or some equivalent). Will I be able to export my preferences, stars, playlists, favorites, etc?

I want to mirgrate my Nextcloud instance from a VPS to server in my home. I run the Nextcloud AIO Docker container, which uses Borg backup. The backup repo is about ~70 GB.

How would I best go about transferring it? Is using scp a good solution here (in combination with nohup so that I don't have to keep my ssh session active)? Or is there some other best practice way of doing this?

I'm running Proxmox on a Lenovo ThinkCentre and I decided to swap the internal 256 GB 2,5" SSD for a 500 GB NVME.

I installed the new NVME alongside the old SSD, and formated it in ext4 with a single partition. I then proceeded to 'dd /dev/sda /dev/nvme0n1' and it went through without an error.

My impression was that it would clone all content from the old drive to the new, but it wouldn't boot the new drive. I then logged in and set a boot flag via fstab a, but that only helped me boot but the system gets stuck at "waiting for root file system".

Nothing is lost as the old drive still works fine when installed but how do I complete the swap correctly so I can go NVME-only?

Just picked up a 128GB USB A/C stick that can go on my keyring. What are some things I should put on it to have access to at all times?

I already have self hosted services accessible over my VPN, so this would be for when I can't access that.

I'm thinking at least Ventoy and some common ISOs, then I'm not sure what else.

Where can I buy linux stickers?

Probably, I'd like to get some red hat stickers. Tux is too sweet and fedora is just white and blue. A red hat is more striking.

I have a hdd attached to my server. It's sda but has 2 partitions so sda1 @16M and sda2 @3.6T It defaulted to being in the location /media/devmon so I kept that and it worked for ages. Suddenly the data is gone. I had files located here: /media/devmon/4tb_drive/kiwix/zim and that directory is now empty. But I put the drive into a Windows box, and everything was there.

When I run mount /dev/sda2 /media/devmon/ it says:

The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0).
Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount.
Falling back to read-only mount because the NTFS partition is in an
unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation
or fast restarting.)
Could not mount read-write, trying read-only

I originally formatted this drive in Windows, is that the issue? Ideally I'd use btrfs or zfs not ntfs, but here we are.

How do I get access again?

I watched this video where they talked about how someone installed Linux on their Google drive. Like, installing everything in Google drive, not finding some Google client. Storing the /* in Drive.

I am currently attempting to do this as well, but with Microsoft OneDrive. I'll update you all on my progress!

Just wanted to find out if there was any progress in terms of screenshots when using gamescope and KDE 6. Last time I tried (running Arch and with an AW3423DWF monitor with HDR 1000), display support worked, but screenshots seemed insanely washed out and generally broken, which was unfortunately a make it or break it feature for me. Has anyone got a similar setup that they can try it out on?

This isn't a gloat post. In fact, I was completely oblivious to this massive outage until I tried to check my bank balance and it wouldn't log in.

Apparently Visa Paywave, banks, some TV networks, EFTPOS, etc. have gone down. Flights have had to be cancelled as some airlines systems have also gone down. Gas stations and public transport systems inoperable. As well as numerous Windows systems and Microsoft services affected. (At least according to one of my local MSMs.)

Seems insane to me that one company's messed up update could cause so much global disruption and so many systems gone down :/ This is exactly why centralisation of services and large corporations gobbling up smaller companies and becoming behemoth services is so dangerous.

Was looking at getting a macbook air with an m1 chip in it and running Asahi Linux on it. My question is how viable is it for daily life? E.g. browsing, torrenting, uni notes ect. Would it be equivalent to a regular x86 laptop running Linux? Or would I be missing useful features?

Edit: Another question is how it holds up against newer AMD laptops, as it is 3-4 years old at this point.

I have a NTFS drive for Storage, which is shared between Win 11.

I want to change the location of (or replace) ~/Downloads, ~/Music, etc..,.

Note that the link to made is between NTFS and EXT4.

I found two ways while searching.

   1.Creating **Symlinks** in `~` with target pointed to folders in NTFS drive.

   2. **Mounting** the NTFS folders **directly** to`~/Downloads`, `~/Music`, etc..,.

Which one should I do? Which one is more beneficial?

Also how to mount folders to other folders (option 2) ? (I would really appreciate a GUI way)

I know this is not that important of a thing to post on Main Linux Community, but I already asked 2 linux4noobs community, and they are empty.

This is a continuation to my previous discussion, where most of the people said,

1. It doesn't matter where I mount.

2. Mount certain folders directly into home other. (like mounting /mnt/data/music to ~/music)

to my shame i did not know how to customize the nmtui default colors (for the sake of my own health and mental stability). after reading a bit, i found out it uses the so-called newt backend with the whiptail app.

long story short... turns out it reads some of the env variables for that backend to setup the colors (if you're interested, here's where this happens in the code).

so you can simply set these env variables before calling nmtui. here's a combination i came up with:

NEWT_COLORS='root=black,black;window=black,black;border=white,black;listbox=white,black;label=blue,black;checkbox=red,black;title=green,black;button=white,red;actsellistbox=white,red;actlistbox=white,gray;compactbutton=white,gray;actcheckbox=white,blue;entry=lightgray,black;textbox=blue,black' nmtui

Ted Ts'o sent out the EXT4 updates today for Linux 6.11. He explained in that pull request:

"Many cleanups and bug fixes in ext4, especially for the fast commit feature. Also some performance improvements; in particular, improving IOPS and throughput on fast devices running Async Direct I/O by up to 20% by optimizing jbd2_transaction_committed()."

The messages here are mostly in German, but I'll try to translate mist of it:

EDIT: I kinda forgot to actually mention my problem. When booting nornall, I get stuck at a lonely white blinking cursor on a black screen, so startx seems to make some problems. I enter a TTY and run startx and this is what I get when running startx:

SOLUTION

• Uninstall your current nvidia driver (for example using sudo apt remove nvidia-driver on Debian)
• Install the headers for your kernel. your kernel you can check rather easily by running neofetch
• Install the headers required for your kernel. Do that by listing all packages with your kernel name in it. For example like this: apt list *6.9.7+bpo*
• reboot, install your nvidia driver again and rovoot again. Should be done.

So, I have my desktop configured with two drives, one has a regular windows install on it that I need to play games with my brother. That works fine.
My second drive originally had Debian on it. But I wanted to also install EndeavorOS. At this point in time, all 3 work, but the selection process to access each system is painfully different.

To access Windows, I just boot from cold, and hit enter or wait for the timer to run out on Windows booting. But when I hit esc to cancel booting Windows, it brings me to Debian's GRUB selector. But I think when I installed EOS I used the default settings, and I believe it doesn't use GRUB by default (systemd). So the GRUB menu I get only has Debian or Windows. If I hit 'esc' again I am brought to the grub> command line. Here the only thing I know how to do is type "exit" and it closes this grub> cmd line and opens another, very similar one. I type 'exit' again and I am finally met with EndeavorOS's boot selector (I believe this is systemd?)

Now I know from my first dual boot with windows/Debian that I am pretty much stuck having windows boot loader run first, so my perfect scenario of having a single selector off boot is a pipe dream, but I'd love to remove a few of the GRUB cmd steps in getting to EOS (chances are I will only need the Debian system for very specific tasks. odds are I will end up removing it) I'm guessing if I would have told the EOS installer to use GRUB it would have potentially added EOS to the GRUB selection screen? Is it possible to rectify this without wiping and reinstalling with different boot loader options?
